Lip Smackers Live On!

Moms of all tweens and tweens alike, rejoice: Lip Smackers has been brought back from the brink! Last January, Lip Smackers' manufacturer, The Bonne Bell Company, announced that it was closing shop. The scent of the Dr. Pepper Biggy was a constant in my lip gloss rotation from my own tween years, and as a mom I bought these for my own tweens (Lip Smackers make excellent stocking stuffers, Easter Egg fillers, and birthday gift toppers!). 'Twas devastating news to lose this cultural icon. Luckily for tweens and tweens-at-heart everywhere, the Lip Smackers brand has been brought back into production by the new company owner, Markwins International Corp.
Dr. Pepper, the classic "Biggy"s, Cotton Candy, and Bubble Gum, smack on!

(P.S. Sadly the Thin Mint Lip Smackers are discontinued - but maybe we can start a campaign lobby the Girl Scouts to bring them back?
P.P.S. Your eyes do not deceive you: that IS a Swarovski-encrusted Lip Smacker Biggy!)

Camp Gear for Tweens

'Tis the season to gear up for camp. Whether your tween is headed to sleepaway camp or on a summer getaway, here are our picks to keep her in fun fearless fashion all summer long:

Neon is a big trend this year (Exhibit A: tweens at One Direction concerts), and we think these neon duffle bags in neon yellow and neon pink are not only right on trend but also practical (because they help her to find her bag in the crowd). $97 from Deux Lux
She can never have enough towels for the beach or pool, so we found these adorable seahorse towels (bonus: they're on sale!). $20 on sale from Lands End

For those camp color wars, face paint that's easy to apply allow her to deck herself and her cabin-mates out in team colors. At the shop we stocked Sport Face because it was super easy to apply and was no-fuss (think ChapStick as face paint - no brushes needed). $3.50 for two from SportFace.com

One of our tweens is on a swim team, so we go through a lot of swimsuits. Our favorite brand has a funny name: Dolfin Uglies. These suits are so NOT ugly - they have the most fun prints we've seen! We especially love that they stand-up to a lot of wear and have terrific, sporty-cuts. The best deals for Dolfins seem to be online at SwimOutlet.com; prices range from $20-38

We loathe the lugging of multiple bottles on every outing, so we look for products that do double-duty. Avon's Skin So Soft makes an SPF30 sunscreen combined with a bug repellent that works perfectly for our tweens. It's on sale now, 2 for $15.00 at Avon.com
'Speaking of sun protection, here's another fun product mash-up: UV sensitive craft beads. We're sending our tweens to camp this year with packets of color-changing UV energy beads that she can craft into friendship bracelets, hair barrettes, bag tags, and more. Packets of 500 beads are $17 from Steve Spangler Science

Sadly our tweens' mom (yours truly) is not talented in the hair style department, so we always look admiringly at the cute hair styles done by Mindy at CuteGirlsHairstyles. Her Fourth of July glow-in-the-dark bun looks easy enough that even we could manage it, and the fun Glowby sticks are perfect for tucking into camp care packages. Glowby's are $5/apiece and come in 8 colors

Make it easy for her to send letters home or keep in touch with friends the old-fashioned way: by writing letters. Especially for those no-electronics camps, fun stationary is a must. We love these fun, no-fuss send and seal stationary packs from Iscream. $6.80 for a packet of 40 cards - just add stamps and she's good to go!

What are your tween's summer camp essentials? Please share your tips!

Finally: Athletic Gear Designed JUST for Tween Girls

Loyal readers know that we're constantly monitoring the market for gear that's designed with tweens in mind, and many of you will remember that we noted the launch of a new line of athletic gear by Ivivva from the founders of Lululemon back in 2009. The line is finally available State-side, and we were thrilled to have our tweens review their latest collection. We have three serious tween athletes in our house: a ballet dancer, a fencer, and an ice skater. Each girl reviewed the line - the tween fencer's review of three pieces from the collection is the first in this series.

Indi's Review of Ivivva:
I fence three days a week and attend a ton of tournaments all over the country. The sport requires you to wear fencing whites, but you have to wear workout gear underneath. You sweat A LOT, and the under layer has to be light and enable you to really MOVE. I field-tested three items from the Ivivva Athletica line - here's what I thought:
The hoodie was super cool! I particularly loved the thumb-holes on the sleeves because it was interesting, and I like that style of “skater girl”. Also, I liked that it was reversible because then I could pull it off and on, and it wouldn’t matter which way it was facing (so I didn’t have to turn it right side out). I also liked the styles of the jacket because one was plain, and one was patterned - which is great because then it could go well with the outfit you choose. I found the pony-tail hole in the back of the hood funny, but kind of odd. I still enjoyed seeing my friends reactions when I turned away from them and they could see my hair coming out of my hood.
The pants proved to be a great staple to my closet. They were plain black with a blue stripe on the top, giving it some pattern. It went well with most things I wore and was great to when I needed a pair of bottoms to pair with my top, I also enjoyed that flexibility they allowed me, a great thing when I need them to work out in. Overall, I liked them!
I really loved this tank! It was fitted (a good thing when you need it to wear under a lot of protective gear) and made me look professional and put together when I went to fencing practice. I also liked the color because it was different shades of blue that had a subtle, though interesting pattern. I also appreciated how it seemed to help me not be drenched in sweat at the end of a practice, but relatively dry - it's well named as the "Keep Ur Cool Tank". I thought it was awesome!!!

Hoodie, $64, Pants, $56, Tank, $22 - all from Ivivva Athletica

Mom's note: As a parent, I'll note that Ivivva is worth the premium price. The items have held up very well in the wash (cool water, tumble dry), the material really "breathes", and the fit flatters our tweens of all body types. We've bought budget athletic gear from Target as well as pricey items from Under Armour in the past, but this is the first line that's really worked for our girls - probably because it was designed with tween girls in mind from the get-go.

Hunger Games Bling For Tweens

"The Hunger Games" movie coming out today isn't for every tween. (The rule in our house is that we have to read the book before seeing the movie. In this instance, our eldest tweens have read "The Hunger Games" trilogy, so they are being allowed to see the movie so long as they're accompanied by an adult. The youngest tween will need to wait a few more years before she can see the movie.)

That said, we are HUGE fans of Katniss Everdeen as a positive, strong heroine for tween girls. And while we enjoyed reading the "Twilight" series, Bella Swan's self-pity and helplessness made mom flinch - a lot. In honor of Katniss, we stumbled upon these fun talismans of a bow and arrow on Etsy. They remind us of her strength and talent - two qualities that we're looking forward to seeing portrayed and celebrated by a girl on the big screen.

$6.50 on Pier7Craft's Etsy shop.

A Braces Care Package

Our eldest tween got braces on yesterday - oh the drama! MsTwixt recalls being excited to get her braces when she was a tween because it was a rite of passage into teenager-hood. Alas, our tween was/is traumatized by the event.

To help ease the pain, both literally and figuratively, we ducked into our local supermarket and put together a quick care package (for whatever reason, it hadn't occurred to me to anticipate this drama). Her orthodontist warned us that the first few days would be quite sore, so soft foods would help. Here's what we included:
  • Ibuprofen (for the pain)
  • A magazine (to hopefully distract her a bit)
  • Foods her orthodonist said she could eat:
    • Smooth ice creams with no nuts or candy (her favorite are the Starbucks flavors) - we covered their tops with freezer tape labeled "For braces ONLY" to ward off her siblings (and her dad)
    • Applesauce
    • Pudding cups
    • Yogurt cups
  • Lip balm (to help soothe some very chafed lips)
  • Disposable toothbrushes like Wisp (to ensure she can still make it to class on time after lunch)
  • Balloons in her favorite color sporting big smiles with braces
Other items that would be great to include: straws, a stuffed animal with braces embroidered on, dental wax, special orthodontic toothbrushes, orthodontic dental floss, and a travel mirror.

The care package brought a smile back to her face - mission accomplished!

The list of foods she should avoid was long, so we're researching options for substitutes that she can enjoy (e.g. Pirate's Booty instead of popcorn at the movies) - PLEASE share your tips for braces-safe food swaps!

HarajukuMini for Tweens at Target; Gwen Stefani as Kid Fashion Designer

Hitting stores this week at your neighborhood Target is Gwen Stefani's uber-cool line, HarajukuMini. Fashionistas have followed her L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers lines for years, but this marks Ms. Stefani's first foray into an accessible, budget-conscious market. We headed to our local Target in Washington, DC earlier this week and left with our wallets much lighter. (Shh, don't tell our tweens, but we picked up a few items as holiday presents as well!)

Our fave picks are the faux-leather motorcycle jacket and the tartan punk pants - both about $25 at Target (in-store only).

BTW, we've seen pics of the HarajukuMini bags and suitcases but haven't seen them in stores - do post a comment and let us know if you scored any fun accessories from this line!

Fun Tween Tradition on School Year's Eve: Schultuete

Happy Back to School! Our tweens return to school tomorrow, including one starting middle school (!). The girls aren't the ones only excited/nervous about Back to School - Mom loves the idea of starting fresh too. Readers know that the MsTwixt household celebrates every little thing, so here is one of our tweens' favorite Back to School traditions that your family might enjoy too:
Schultuetes are a German tradition of giving paper cones filled with school supplies and trinkets to celebrate the first day of school. They remind us of Christmas stockings. They are SO easy to make - all you need is: poster board, a stapler, some tissue paper, scissors, a glue stick, and a piece of ribbon.
Here are  the instructions:
1) Roll a piece of poster board into a cone shape. Your goal is to have the smallest opening possible at the tip of the cone. The overall size of the cone itself isn't critical. We find that a standard piece of drugstore poster board rolls naturally into a narrow cone that is approximately 30" tall.
2) Staple the poster board closed to keep the cone shape, and then trim the base of the cone so that the end is fairly level (precision isn't important here).
3) Decorate the outside of the cone as you like - we tend to use school colors and then use Sharpies to write our tweens' names on the schultuetes. Stickers are a great choice too.
4) Fill the cones with small school supplies. This year we included PJs from BeePosh, thin pens to help her color-code her notes, personalized pencils from Oriental Trading, erasers, rulers, portable hand sanitizer gel, a new toothbrush, and some scratch-n-sniff stickers.
5) Once the cones are filled, run glue stick along the INTERIOR edge of the cone's base. Then press tissue paper along the glued edge (we find that 2 pieces of tissue paper works well).
6) Cinch the tissue paper closed with the piece of ribbon, and Voila - a homemade schultuete! Schultuetes can be made in any size and any color combination - have fun with it!
Our tweens open theirs the night before school starts (School Year's Eve), and it's a great opportunity for parents to tuck in any straggling supplies.
What Back to School traditions does your family have? We'd love to hear!

A Justin Bieber Singing Toothbrush?

Tween Justin Bieber fans will rejoice: a company called Brush Buddies has made a singing Justin Bieber toothbrush. The idea behind this "build a better toothbrush" is that the toothbrush plays a song for the full amount of time that one is supposed to brush your teeth. The Justin Bieber line plays "Somebody to Love" or "Baby" or "You Smile", and there's also JB floss (which looks like a CD), and a travel kit. Given the star's mega-watt smile, it seems the company has chosen a good product model.

Available online at BrushBuddies; $1.99 for the toothbrush

Meet Justin Bieber at the New York City Launch Event for Someday

By now you've probably seen the television ads for Justin Bieber's latest project, a fragrance for girls called "Someday". What you may not know is that all sales of the perfume benefit charity.  The product was created by the Give Back Brands Foundation, and ALL proceeds benefit the following organizations:  Give Back Brands Foundation and Communities in Schools LA West.

In addition, Mr. Bieber is auctioning off the opportunity to accompany him at the official Someday launch in New York City on June 23.  The proceeds from this auction will also benefit Communities in Schools and the Give Back Brands Foundation.

While a bit schlocky, here's what the star had to say about the fragrance: “Someday is the idea that we can change the world, make our dreams come true, and even be with the one person that means everything. Giving back has always been incredibly important to me, but let's be honest... I wanted to create a fragrance for my female fans that I can't get enough of... that I want to get next to and I can't stay away from. I know they'll love the scent, but also the opportunity to support some amazing charities. It's a gift that gives back.”

The auction for the June 23rd launch event is being run by CharityBuzz, and bidding is currently at $3500.00 (the auction ends on June 21st). The perfume itself is considerably less expensive at $45.00

A Middle School Finals Care Package

These days our middle school tweens are busy prepping for their final exams (blissfully, the elementary-school-age tween does not yet have finals). Remembering back to our own exam weeks and the sense of desperation we recall, we were inspired to put together a Middle School Finals Care Package. Here's what we included:
  • Good & Plenty candies (black licorice has tummy-soothing properties and re-energizes tired brains)
  • Sugarless mint gum (the big can; enough to help stave off the inevitable fingernail biting for a little bit; Freedent gum is easiest on those with braces)
  • New nail polish (here's the trick: tweens are loathe to scuff up a new manicure; waiting for the polish to dry gives them uninterrupted reading time - plus there's incentive to not bite their nails when they look so good)
  • Package of hair ties (anything to help keep her hair off her face while she studies)
  • Vitamin Waters (we bought a package of mini-bottles as a treat that wasn't soda; our tweens love that they contain vitamins to help them focus - we chose "Focus", "Spark", and "Energy")
  • Burt's Bees Blemish Stick (stress causes breakouts, and this formula is all natural and not overpowering)
  • Lavender scented candle (lavender fragrance has a calming effect, and there's something comforting about lighting a candle; obviously do this only when there is adult supervision)
  • Mint flavored lip balm (to comfort those bitten lips - plus mint has cooling and invigorating effects)
  • Box of chamomile tea (a terrific, caffeine-free way to wind down after a study session)
As a bonus, all of the items listed above were available at our local CVS/drugstore - one stop shopping and thus stress-free for the parents!

What items would you add to the Middle School Finals Care Package?

The Perfect Gift for the Golden Prize Egg on Easter for Tweens

This year, our tweens' golden eggs in the Easter egg hunt will contain these beautiful sterling silver and glass lockets. We've strung them on simple silk cords to match their Easter dresses. These lockets are glass on both sides and can be filled whatever the tweens choose to insert - sort of live a mini-shadow box. We can't wait to see what they put in their lockets!

The Best Easter Basket Gifts for Tweens: Quiz Books

Most Easter gifts we've seen are perfect for younger kids, but we're on a quest to find the coolest Easter gifts for tweens. To help make our tweens' Easter baskets reflect their age and interest, we're including some quiz books made just for them:
  • Tabletopics is a popular party game, and they've just released a portable version. We've got a long ride to grandmother's house this Easter, so we're going to try the Tabletopics To Go for Kids to help pass time. $9
  • We've written about the series "Coke or Pepsi?" - these are perfect for sleepovers, at parties, on car trips, etc. (And we're giving away a set of these for free! Just "Like" our Facebook page and post a comment about the books.)
  • Mad Libs are classic, but they've just launched a very modern Mad Lips App for the iPhone and iTouch. For your wired tween, this could be perfect. $3.99

The Best Easter Basket Gifts for Tweens: Origami Lucky Stars

Our tweens' seem to have developed a bit of an origami obsession of late - which may be due to their recent origami crane project for Japan. Whatever the reason, origami is an entertaining and fun (and quiet!) activity that your crafty tween will love. We've left hints for the Easter bunny to fill our tweens' eggs with little strips of origami paper so that they can fold these "lucky stars" and love that this idea helps to distinguish a tween's Easter basket as original, inexpensive and crafty.

Origami star strips are widely available, and this website sells them for $3.00 for a package of 100 (instructions are included) - or you could simply cut letter-size, lightweight paper into one-half-inch long strips.

The Best Easter Basket Gifts for Tweens: Gummi Bear Ear Phones

More treats to make your tween's Easter basket the best ever: these gummi bear ear phones look good enough to eat! They look like real gummi bears - and smell like real gummi bears - but they're candy for her ears.

These would be perfect for a tween's Easter basket (see our list from last year for more ideas) or tucked inside a golden egg.

From Sakar Industries, $9.99

More ideas for your gummi bear fan: giant gummi bears, a gummi bear night light, or a gummi bear chandelier.

Note: While we do prefer the over-the-ear style of headphone especially for everyday use by tweens, these gummi bear ones are perfect for tweens on-the-go because they're so lightweight and compact.

The Best Easter Basket Gifts for Tweens: Classic Bunny Slippers

Tweens still love to find treats in their Easter basket - here's how to make her basket the hippest in town.

Our first pick is the classic bunny slipper (Debby Ryan wore these in "16 Wishes"). For some reason, bunny slippers are nearly impossible to find these days, but we found a site that carries them online. They're $29.95 for adult sizes 5 and up, and $24.95 for kids' sizes.

A Tween's Review of "Coke or Pepsi?"

When I had my store, Twixt, we ran dozens of workshops with tween girls on topics ranging from Inauguration Ball gown sketching to how to cope with peer pressure to her dream room interior design to mother-daughter relationships. We began nearly every workshop with an ice breaker and the most fun ones came from the book series "Coke or Pepsi?"

"Coke or Pepsi?" is a book with questions for girls to ask other girls about their interests, their likes and dislikes, etc. Our own tweens love to bring these books on sleepovers, to parties, on road trips, etc. The publishers just released out a new edition of the book, and our eldest tween's review of it is here:

"I thought the "Coke or Pepsi?" Girl Diary was awesome! It is chock full of great diary entry spurring ideas! Some of these ideas include a virtual tree to carve your own personalized message into, space to write the letter you’ll never send, and a page to turn your own drama into a movie poster. I also really enjoy this because even if your not a writer there is still ways to get your feelings on paper. Only suggestions - maybe a more discreet cover for privacy you know? Thanks "Coke or Pepsi?" for a GREAT space for a girl to unwind at the end of a day!! <3 "

The publishers gave us two copies of this series to give away, and we're thrilled to share this with our readers as our April giveaway (congrats to our March giveaway winner, Hailey, who won the Justin Bieber Special Edition 3-D Glasses). To win these books, you all you have to do is become a fan of MsTwixt on Facebook and post a comment on our Wall about this book (if you're already of fan of ours on Facebook (thank you!) - just post a comment about this book on our Wall). We'll select two winners at random from those who post comments, and you can post as many comments as you'd like. (NOTE: Tweens: if you would like to enter this contest, you must have your parent enter. As Facebook's policy is that you must be 13 years or older to have a profile, we hope that this helps to ensure that parents only enter. This is because we want to respect the privacy of tweens and will not collect personally identifiable information on kids. As always, please be smart online - see our tips on online safety for tweens as a reminder.) We'll draw one winner on April 8th and another on April 15th.

Note: as a reminder, MsTwixt is strictly editorial and there is no pay-to-play. We receive lots of requests to review products and turn down nearly all of them. This is one of those few times when what we love and have recommended in the past matched up with a chance to share the item with our readers. Unlike most blogs, we never do paid product reviews - you're getting the dish straight-up.)

World Water Day and Tweens

World Water Day was earlier this week (March 22, 2011), and it is a day for all of us to consider how we use the planet's most precious resource: fresh water.

Foregoing the use of bottled water is a great place to begin, so here's our picks for the best reusable water bottles for tweens on the go:
  • Your sporty tween will appreciate the near-indestructible and lightweight water bottles made by Klean Kanteen. These are made out of stainless steel, BPA-free and come in a range of colors. Also, these can be ordered with a variety of drinking spouts, including the Sports Cap which is perfect for rapid rehydration breaks during sports. $16.45 for 18 oz; $17.95 for 27oz size from KleanKanteen.com
  • An eco-conscious tween will love these glass bottles in a silicone sleeve from LifeFactory (the silicone sleeve protects the glass while it's being carried and prevents breakage from all but the most violent falls). These glass bottles can hold both hot (think herbal tea) and cold beverages, making them perfect for year-round use. $19.99 for 16 oz; $21.99 for 22 oz from

  • Sigg's aluminum bottles are widely available and easy to find. These bottles are also lightweight and come in a range of prints that will appeal to your artsy tween (they even come in a Hello Kitty design). $21.99 for a .6L size from MySigg.com

  • Note: as a reminder, MsTwixt is strictly editorial, and there is NO pay-to-play.

A Justin Bieber Birthday Gift For Your Tween

We've had a tremendous response to our post on a Justin Bieber/"Never Say Never" themed-birthday party, and we appreciate everyone's comments and emails!

To thank our readers, we thought we'd share the love and give you a little something to celebrate the Bieb's birthday in style:  we're giving away a pair of limited edition purple Justin Bieber 3D glasses! (We purchased several of these for our youngest tween's birthday and it turns out that we overestimated by one pair - our  error is your gain.) They are brand new and in their original packaging.

To win these cool purple shades, all you need to do is post a comment below about how you and/or your tween marked Mr. Bieber's birthday yesterday (our tween's report is here).  We'll need your email address as well, so send it to us at mstwixt@gmail.com (we NEVER sell or lease your information, and if you are a tween, please have your grown-up send us their email address).

We'll draw one lucky tween's name from the list of comments on Saturday, March 5th. Happy posting!
