One Direction in Concert: Our Review

UPDATE: 5/25/12: First Tween Malia Obama is also a One Direction fan and attend the show last night in Virginia.
As tweens put it, "Every generation has a boy band. 1D is ours." Another group of five lads from across the Pond lit up the stage at the Patriot Center last night and were met with record-setting decibels (122, which exceeds Verizon Center records as well) by their sold-out crowd of tween fans. The noise was so deafening that one couldn't hear the band until a few minutes into their first song.
One Direction has proved to be a break-out hit, and they put on a show that delighted their Washington-area fans last night. They performed hits from their "Up All Night" album (although many tweens reading this column will state that every song is hit on that record) and did several cover songs as well. Their cover of Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" was a particular standout amongst the crowd and was notable both for their adept tweaks on the arrangement and their fidelity to the soul of the lyrics.
"Our boys", as they are referred to, kept the stage-set simple with a focus on their trademark, clean-cut ensembles and a band of four other people. They limited their footwork to traditional a-capella style moves, and their fans ate it up. The five-some (Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson) evenly shared center stage and acknowledged and thanked all corners of the venue. Fans threw all manner of gifts on the stage, including a baby doll, ping pong balls, a red Nationals baseball cap (which Niall promptly donned), and an Indian flag (which Niall draped over his shoulders - perhaps confusing it initially with the Irish flag, which has the some colors?).
During the concert, One Direction answered questions sent via Twitter from the crowd. Perhaps most entertaining amongst their responses was Mr. Payne's impersonation of Louis Armstrong using lyrics from "What a Wonderful World".
A new female recording star, Camryn, opened for One Direction, and she had arguably a tough spot to fill, what with a stadium full of tween girls screaming for One Direction. She did an admirable job of pumping up the crowd with songs from her own repertoire including "Set the Night on Fire" and a rousing cover of Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger". As an aside, the music that played before One Direction took stage that got the most spirited response from the crowd were songs from "Grease". The entire Patriots Center it seemed sang "Summer Lovin'" and "Greased Lightening" en masse.
Tweens documented the entire show with in their usual way with smartphone videos, photos, Tweets, Tumblr posts, and Facebook updates posted throughout the evening - almost certainly a Facebook query this morning will turn up several boot-leg videos from the concert. Many in the audience came wearing fan tee-shirts they had customized at home with puffy paint, fringe, and glitter, and day-glo colors were de rigeur.

First Tweens Cheer Justin Bieber at "Christmas in Washington" Show

Meeting Justin Bieber is quickly becoming de rigueur for the First Tweens. Malia and Sasha Obama again welcomed Justin Bieber to the annual "Christmas in Washington" show this weekend at the National Building Museum. The Biebs was the big tween draw last night, but other tween favorite performers included Victoria Justice, Jennifer Hudson, Cee Lo Green, Conan O'Brien, and The Band Perry.

The First Tweens were dressed in colorful holiday attire for the show: Malia Obama wore a bright yellow silk dress by the fashion house "Elizabeth and James" (which parents may recall as being the clothing line developed by former tween stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) with black tights and flats accessorized by a long chain necklace, and Sasha Obama wore a ballet-inspired lilac tulle dress with plum-colored tights and metallic flats.

This was the 30th Annual "Christmas in Washington" event, and it benefits the Children's Medical Center. Mr. Bieber has also performed at the White House Easter Egg Roll and at the 2010 Christmas in Washington event. You can tune into the TNT channel broadcast of "Christmas in Washington" this Friday, December 16th at 8pm EST - or click here for your local broadcast time.

First Tweens Cheer BigTimeRush at National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Malia and Sasha Obama attended the 89th National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Ellipse last night. On hand to perform "Beautiful Christmas" was Nickelodeon Band Big Time Rush, and the First Tweens cheered their performance and bopped along. The girls continued their sartorial love of color and wore bright, double-breasted coats in deep blue (Sasha) and black with red piping (Malia) - both girls also sported skinny jeans.

Dolce and Gabbana Heart Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber is on his World Tour, and this weekend he played in Milan, Italy. Major fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana threw a party for The Biebs after his concert on Saturday night. The designers are fans of the star, and he has been sporting their clothes at recent awards shows.

Dolce & Gabbana hosted the party at their restaurant, Gold, and set up a VIP area with the star's name in huge gold letters. Mr. Gabbana said: "We like him a lot, although he's very young, he's very attentive towards style and he takes care of his look".

New Study Warns Tuning Out to Music Could Signal Depression in Tweens

A study was just published in the "Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine" that found a link between passive media habits, such as tuning out to t.v. and music, and "major depressive disorder" in tweens and tweens.

The authors are quick to point out that this does NOT mean that tweens should not listen to music, or that tweens who listen to a lot of music are depressed. But they did find that tweens and teens who were depressed opted to listen to music and tune-out using "passive media" whereas kids who consumed media actively (for example, reading or actively engaging in phone conversations) tended not to suffer from depression. The study found that: "The group that reported the most reading, for example, had a 90% lower risk of being depressed than the group that reported reading the least."

Dr. Primack from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine was one of the primary authors of the study, and said, “We sort of thought to ourselves that when you have depression, your brain is not working properly. So it’s much harder to sit down to a book and have to use a lot of the frontal lobe of your brain to create the story and the characters in your head, whereas, it should be quite easy to flop down in front of a television and turn on whatever’s there.”

The key takeaway is to watch for how much your tween zones out using various media; listening to music for hours on end and an inability to read for a length of time may be signs of depression.

Note: MsTwixt does not have a membership to JAMA,  so we could not access the entire study. The abstract can be viewed for free here.

More ideas for your gummi bear fan: giant gummi bears, a gummi bear night light, or a gummi bear chandelier.

Is Willow Smith the New Gamma Girl?

We've just seen Willow Smith's newest video, "21st Century Girl" and can't help but wonder if she's a new Gamma Girl role model. You can check out the video below and on YouTube.

The song is a sort of dance-y mantra for girls going their own way and living life on their own terms. Unlike a lot of music videos out there, "21st Century Girl" features totally positive images of girls doing everything from dancing to skateboarding to riding BMX bikes to just rocking out. It's just been released and reviews are still coming, but we think your tween will really flip for it.

Ms. Smith was just honored by the NAACP and is opening for Justin Bieber's European tour (they perform in Dublin tonight), so she's got a lot going on at the moment. We can't wait to hear what else she's got to say about girl power.

Glee's Amber Riley Wants You to "Save the Music" in Schools

March is "Music in our Schools" month, and all kinds of organizations (VH1, the National Association for Music Education, and DoSomething.Org to name a few) are working to activate students across the U.S. to raise awareness about this issue and prevent losing their school's music education programs. The Battle for the Bands campaign is a big part of this campaign, and this year, Glee's Amber Riley is lending her voice to the effort (last year, Nick Jonas was a spokesperson for the campaign).

The VH1 Save The Music Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring instrumental music education in America's public schools, and raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child's complete education. To date, the Foundation has provided more than $47 million in new musical instruments to 1,750 public schools in more than 100 cities around the country, impacting the lives of over 1.6 million children.

Willow Smith Wins NAACP Image Award For Outstanding New Artist

Willow Smith has just been awarded the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding New Artist. She beat out Bruno Mars, Jason Derulo and BoB for this award, which was no small feat. Her hit single "Whip Your Hair" has been a breakout hit and the basis for the award.

Tellingly, Ms. Smith was not able to accept her award in person because she is touring with Justin Bieber.

First Tween Sasha Obama and Nick Jonas at Motown Tribute

The White House hosted a night of Motown music in honor of Black History Month last night, and First Tween Sasha Obama helped to dance the night away. Video from ABC News is below:

Stars who performed tributes to Motown greats included Nick Jonas (himself no stranger to the Obamas), Natasha Bedingfield, Sheryl Crow, Jordin Sparks, John Legend, and Amber Riley and Matt Salling from the cast of Glee. The President took a great deal of ribbing about his own stiff dance style from emcee Jamie Foxx, but he took it good-naturedly and danced with young Ms. Obama on the stage during "Dancing in the Streets."

As part of the First Lady's new initiative, "The Sound of Young America", Michelle Obama invited 100 local students in Washington to attend an educational workshop at the White House on the history of Motown. You can watch that video here.

10 Year Old Tween Maria Aragon Invited to Sing With Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga has invited ten year old Maria Aragon to join her onstage at her Toronto concert to sing her hit, "Born This Way". Ms. Aragon joins Greyson Chance and Justin Bieber in being the latest music sensation to be discovered via YouTube.

Her mother uploaded a video of her singing "Born This Way", and Perez Hilton saw it and sent it to Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga was so impressed that she contacted Ms. Aragon and invited her to join her on stage.

Ellen DeGeneres had Ms. Aragon on her show yesterday - we loved her interview and the reasons she expressed for wanting to cover the song.

Lady Gaga's Monster Ball concert plays at the Verizon Center in Washington tomorrow.

Tween Fashion Blogger Tavi is a Justin Bieber Fan

'Turns out that Justin Bieber's appeal extends to the high-brow couture crowd: tween fashion blogger Tavi is a fan.

Ms. Gevinson took time out to see "Never Say Never" during Fashion Week and was hooked. She writes, "I am pro-JB because someone has to be a tween dreamboat pop boy and he's not going away, but what started out for me as 'I'm just gonna embrace him' has become a bit of an obsession. Plus he started out playing on steps outside a theater."

I have to say it's comforting to know that one of the most important new youth voices is still a young girl at heart who has to do homework and has teeny-bopper crushes.

A Lesson in Grace For Tweens: Justin Bieber at The Grammys

With the blockbuster opening of his "Never Say Never" movie this weekend and coming off of a very successful My World tour, you'd think Justin Bieber has it made. He performed with his usual style at The Grammy's last night, and our tweens were excited to stay up late and watch the young star and Usher tear up the stage. Despite a sold out concert tour and indeterminable press, the young Mr. Bieber was not awarded his industry's highest honor.

At the tender age of 16, he could well have handled this news poorly, but Mr. Bieber instead took the high road and responded with maturity and grace. He continued to sit at attention in the front row of the Grammy Awards (no doubt the hot seat of the evening and the last place anyone would want to be seen after being so publicly overlooked for the honors) and applauded his fellow nominees, winners and performers. Justin Bieber has historically taken solace with his fans via interactions on Twitter, and notably, he did not turn to his Twitter account until after the awards ceremony was over.  It was a sign of professionalism and respect that he waited until the end of the show to interact with his fans and provide them with his reaction.

And his reaction was gracious and honest: he tweeted:
  • "As for the awards...of course I wanted to win. Its been and still is a dream to win a grammy. Was I upset...yes. But I was happy for her also"
  • "Someone said to me tonight its not your successes that define u but your failures. I lost..but I don't plan on this being my last chance...."
  • "I do this because I love it..and I do it for my family friends and fans who support me. I was grateful for the honor and this..."
  • "...Is just the beginning. #NeverSayNever"
  • "Now we have so much to celebrate!! Leggo!"
We were reminded of Taylor Swift's grace under pressure during the Kanye West VMA debacle and are pleased that his reaction lived up to his reputation. (Of course we'll NEVER hear the end of him now that his status as tween idol has been martyred, but we're pleased that thus far he's been a stand-up kind of guy.)

In Case Your Tween Missed It: Live Footage from the "Never Say Never" L.A. Premiere

The premiere of Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" movie was last night in L.A. As with everything "Bieber", the star made full use of digital and social media to share the event with his fans. Here's the video footage from the red carpet, courtesy of Live Stream:
