New Study Finds Strong Link Between R-Rated Movies, Underage Drinking and Tweens

I guess this is a bit self-serving, but here's further reinforcement for me for my "strict mom schtick": a new study from Dartmouth finds that middle schoolers whose parents forbid them from watching R-rated movies are far less likely to start drinking early - and the study took in account other parenting decisions. According to the study, "the movie effect is the over-and-above-effect" over parenting style when it comes to middle-schoolers who tried drinking versus the "barely 3% who tried a drink". Notably, it appears to be the repeated exposure to R-rated movies that causes these outcomes, not the once-time viewing.

Phew! It's nice to have some positive backing for our unpopular (at times, but not always - secretly, we think our tweens like having us as an "out") parenting stance (or, as my tweens put it, "zero-tolerance on R"). And it's tough - a lot of the movies that our tween daughters' friends regularly discuss during lunch or afterschool are R-rated (Kick-Ass stars tween superheros, The Runaways features Twilight star Kristen Stewart and child actress Dakota Fanning, and the new Twilight movie Eclipse could very well be R-rated too - and this is just a sampling based on what's out this week).

What amazes me is that even in the same all-girls school that our tweens attend, parenting views on what is permissable for tweens to watch vary SO WIDELY. Certainly, every family has its own values, but when I see an R-rating, that means that the movie theatre requires the parent to accompany the minor into the theatre - so it means that parents are walking their middle school age daughter into see The Runaways because she's a Kristen Stewart fan. Are tweens really ready to digest/process the very mature themes of addiction and sexual exploration even if this film provides an accurate and riveting portrayal of the glam rock movement in the 70's? In other words, aside from how valuable/worthy a story the film tells, some content is still inappropriate even for middle-schoolers.

Lest I come across as a prudish tyrant, despite our stated "zero tolerance" policy, I'd like to think that should a certain film REALLY be worth viewing before later their teen years (and I'm going to pull a Justice Stewart: "I'll-know-it-when-I-see-it here), we'd at least consider it allowing it (full disclosure: in our case, we permit the girls to see Bend It Like Beckham when we wield the Mute button and in some VERY heavily edited instances, Glee).

With sleepovers and group outings to the mall rampant during the middle school years, I'm not so naive as to believe that I have total control over what my girls view/hear/witness. Far from it. But, as their independence grows, I'd like to think that I'm recording that little voice in their heads letting them know that somethings may not yet be appropriate for them - and that that little voice gives them pause to consider their choices with a bit more analysis than pure peer pressure.

Kids' Choice Awards Pre-Party

Not all of us can jet to L.A. to walk the orange carpet at the Kids' Choice Awards, but a virtual pre-party is being hosted by Nickelodeon Parents' Connect for all to attend (full disclosure: Twixt was voted Best Kids' Clothing Store in DC in the Nickelodeon's Parents' Connect Parents' Pick Awards in both 2008 and 2009).

This year, a new category was created,Cutest Couple, and the President and First Lady have been nominated in it - they are up against Edward and Bella and Jacob and Bella from The Twilight Saga: New Moon among others.

Also up for Kids' Choice Awards are the Twilight cast, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Zack and Cody (played by twin brothers Dylan and Cole Sprouse), iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato. Should be quite the night! The awards show airs on Saturday, March 27th at 8pm.

New Moon Opens Tonight, But Not All Parents Are Thrilled

CNN recently covered tween parent ambivalence about New Moon, and we wrote about this same topic earlier this week here. The movie opens tonight at Tyson's Corner here in the D.C. area. Did you attend the midnight show? Did your tween? Tell us about your experience!

Opting Out of the Twilight and New Moon Craziness?

While all the world is a-twitter about the release of New Moon (the second book and movie in the Twilight series), one would get the impression that this is ALL tween girls are talking about. While New Moon is on track to bust a few movie-going records and has been supported by a star-studded, all-out marketing campaign, a few tweens are opting-out. Miley Cyrus, a tween celebrity favorite, remarked this week during a radio interview that "I don't like anything about it [Twilight]." Ms. Cyrus doesn't believe in vampires and is frightened by werewolves jumping out from the screen.

Several parents have raised concerns about the overt sexualization of New Moon's stunning male leads, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson, but there is little concern about the content of the story (although the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, is a bit more controversial). Dr. Wendy Walsh, who holds a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology, commented on this topic and writes that Twilight isn't over-sexualizing its stars as much as "keeping up with industry standards, for better or worse". She has used the books to start productive conversations with her tween about relationships, hormones and restraint. Dr. Walsh concludes that her own tween daughter's obsession with Jacob is simply an age-appropriate school-girl crush, and, as a parent, she takes solace in Twilight's teenage sex abstention message.

Is your tween Twilight-obsessed? Are you? Will you be attending opening night of the movie this Friday? Has the series sparked any conversations with your tween?

Twilight Barbies?!?!

I suppose these were inevitable, but as of today one can purchase Edward and Bella Barbie dolls. Edward is frosty-skinned, and Bella looks a bit like Skipper. Ms. Twixt is not sure what to make of these - the Twilight series seems a bit mature for the I-still-play-with-Barbies set, doesn't it? What do you think?

How to Get Tix to the D.C. New Moon Advance Screening

Nordstrom in Tysons Corner has bought out the entire AMC theatre at the Tysons Mall to show an advance screening of New Moon on Thursday, November 19th at 9:30pm. Here's the catch: in order to get one ticket, one must spend $50 in the Brass Plum department at Nordstrom. The purchases can be made at either the Bethesda or Tysons locations, and online sales do not count. Tickets for the advance screening are still available as of today.

Volvo and Twilight - A Safer Ride For Tweens and Their Parents?

Swedish car maker Volvo launched an online sweepstakes today featuring Edward from Twilight called "What Drives Edward?" - the winner will attend the November 16th L.A. premiere of New Moon and receive a Volvo XC60. (Full disclosure: MsTwixt owns a Volvo. As a reminder, this blog does not nor ever has accepted payment for any product reviews.) As Twilight fans know, Edward drives a Volvo, and the company hopes to parlay Twilight's appeal to tweens to reach their parents with its safety message. But this is a marketing campaign and so should be recognized as such.

An Official Twilight Twitter

One of the biggest problems with Twitter is that there is little verification of who is tweeting - for example, there are several Miley Cyrus Twitter accounts who claim to be "official" (Ms. Cyrus recently left Twitter as we blogged about earlier). Well, some good news for Twilight fans: Summit Entertainment has created an official Twilight movie series Twitter account at www.twitter.com/twilight. We are also on Twitter at www.twitter.com/MsTwixt

The New Moon soundtrack is also available today, days before it hits the stores, via the official Twilight page on MySpace at www.myspace.com/twilight.
