Lola (Lourdes) Leon on Access to Her Mom's (Madonna's) Closet

Fourteen year old Material Girl designer Lola Leon was recently interviewed about her spring line and spoke about her access to her mom's enviable closet.

Ms. Leon said that she's allowed to borrow clothes from mom but "only if I ask first" and admits "that she has such an amazing collection." Surprisingly, she shared that Madonna often raids her daughter's closet "especially for my shoes and my accessories."

She also announced that the new face of Material Girl will be Kelly Osbourne.

Fun Fashion Blogs For Tweens

It's Fashion Week, and if your tween is into fashion, here are a few blogs you might enjoy reading together:

• Tween fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson has been writing about fashion for years now. Her writing is years ahead of her age, as is her very sophisticated style. She is a great role model for girls following their own hearts and speaking their minds regardless of peer pressure. Her blog is called The Style Rookie.
• Lola Lourdes, Madonna's daughter, writes on the Material Girl blog about her independent style, the bands she's listening to, and her latest vintage obsession.
• Cynthia Rowley is a well known designer with a quirky, fun style. Her blog includes photos of her latest lines but also snaps from recent trips and musings on fun art.
• Kate Spade is now a fashion icon, and her colorful and retro style extends to her blog. A section called "Behind the Curtain" includes her recommendations for museum exhibits, office supplies, and nail polish.
• Cecilia Cassini is a 10-year old designer with an Audrey-Hepburn-like sense of style and whimsy. She blogs irregularly, but her posts are fun to read, and she includes pictures of her latest work and design inspirations.

First Tweens, First Jobs, and Allowances

President Obama certainly speaks to our national economy almost daily, but this morning he addressed tween economic issues - that is allowances and babysitting.

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama each receive $1.00/week for their allowance, and the President and First Lady are teaching the tweens about saving, compound interest, and bank accounts (both girls have their own savings account). In a speech today, President Obama responded to questions about the financial advice he gives to his daughters. He said, "It's a great question, because -- because so many of the problems that we see had to do with the fact that just basic calculations about compound interest and -- and what that means, you know, kids aren't taught that. . . .  "They're starting to get old enough where they may be able to earn some money babysitting."

Our eldest tween began babysitting this summer, and it's been quite the topic of dinner conversation: how much to spend vs save, how to manage the unpredictability of her income, what she's permitted to spend without parental review, etc.

Taylor Momsen and Lola - the Faces of Madonna's Material Girl Line

The star of the Gossip Girl t.v. series, Taylor Momsen, can now add cover girl to her resume - she's been chosen as the new face of Lola Leon's and mom Madonna's clothing line, Material Girl. Ms. Momsen is just 16 years old and is also in a rock band, The Pretty Reckless.

The Newest Tween Fashion Blogger: Lourdes Leon

Lourdes Leon, who goes by Lola, is the 13 year old daughter of Madonna (no last name needed). She joins reigning tween fashion blogger Tavi in launching a blog all about style. Her first entry was last week, and she writes with a genuine tween voice (that being lots of ALL CAPS, run-on's, and stream-of-consciousness musings - witness the opening line): "Helluuur thurrrr, I’m Lola and this is my first blog entry so it’s kind of like ummmm…. I’m just going to use this blog entry to tell y’all a little bit about myself. I’m 13 and I’ll be 14 in October, so I can’t wait for that because I am FINALLY allowed to dye my hair… THANK YOU MOTHER!"

Be forewarned: this blog IS connected to a commercial enterprise: it is part of the Material Girl brand, a line of tween clothing designed by Madonna and Ms. Leon available at Macy's this fall, but we found it to be mostly a style blog and less advertising for the brand.

Happy Birthday to Lourdes!

Madonna's daughter turns 13 today - Happy Birthday to Lourdes! This young woman is emerging from her tween years as a bit of fashion icon in her own right - her edgy style is VERY cool. Things must be a little rough just now after moving from England to New York and having her mother and step-father divorce recently, so we wish her the best in her 13th year.
