The Issues Raised at the Tween Summit

We were hanging out at the Tween Summit this Saturday where Twixt was the only local sponsor. The day was all about tween girls: what tweens want, their dreams, and what they want to see from the government, parents, schools, and society. While the majority of girls in attendance were from the Washington area, we met families who had travelled from Florida, Washington state, and California!

Jess Weiner moderated the day's sessions - if you don't know Jess, you should - she is a well-known speaker on developing girls' self-esteem. She is one of the most high-energy, positive people I've ever met, and one of the few who could keep up with and emcee 300-plus girls. During our interview, Jess spoke about how she sees her role: as an advocate for moms and girls to each other. In her work, she has served as the voice between parents and girls articulating what girls want to/need to say but often times cannot. One of the favorite parts of the Summit for Jess was hearing "unencumbered answers from girls" on issues ranging from the environment to healthcare to media. On the topic of the First Tweens, she says that girls are "so excited to have tweens as role models in the White House" not just because their father is the President, but because they are so relatable. Malia and Sasha Obama live lives so much like other tweens - they attend school, play soccer, care for their pets, take vacations with their parents, cheer for the Jonas Brothers - just like other tweens. Jess also heard from girls at the Summit that they want to see "more real girls" in the media, and that they "want to be featured and acknowledged for their own efforts" (many of the girls attending the Summit are active in their communities and emerging leaders).

P.S. Check out this cool organization started by a group of teen volunteers at the Summit called One is Greater Than None - a girl-organized charity raising money to end child enslavement in Ghana and provide healthcare to families in the U.S. who cannot afford it - pretty big contributions from a group of 8 girls!)

Two other presenters from the day were Alex Penn and Leigh Rachel Faith from Champions Against Bullying, two amazing women who work tirelessly to shine a light on bullying in schools and encourage communities to develop anti-bullying policies on campus. Alex and Leigh spoke about the "changing complexion of bullying" in schools today, how we as a society are more immune to the pain caused by bullying than we ought to be, and the alarming rise in cyberbullying. This mother-daughter duo were especially impressed with the awareness of bullying amongst this crowd and the interest shown by both girls and parents in combatting it.

Jess, Leigh and Alex also addressed parents of the tween girls attending the Summit in separate, parent-focused sessions. The moms I spoke with were effusive in their praise of the presenters saying, "This is EXACTLY what we need in our schools right now," and "It's good to know that I am not the only mom dealing with these issues."

AllyKatzz.com organized the Summit, and they will be publishing the input from the girls' sessions shortly. Girls spent the morning and afternoon sharing their insights on all kinds of issues and contributed their comments on "the White House Wall". You can read our tween reporters' take on the Summit to get a girls' point of view here, and check out our next post on the Tween Summit Concert!

Are You Going to the Tween Summit?

The first ever Summit for tween girls will be held on October 10th here in Washington – www.TweenSummit.com. I had an opportunity to chat with Denise Restauri, CEO of AK Tweens and host of the summit, about this event.

What is the Tween Summit?
The Summit is an opportunity for girls to get together to speak out about what matters to them. We will listen to their thoughts and opinions on a wide range of topics important to tweens and their families from the environment, education, personal safety and self-image to their thoughts on what’s hot and what’s not. The Summit will allow adults and others on our listening panel to examine the minds, motivation and lives of tween girls and give parents, politicians and marketers a more thorough understanding of this enigmatic and highly influential demographic. The day is designed to have a few outstanding speakers, including Jess Weiner (a columnist for Seventeen magazine) and Tish Ciravolo (founder of Daisy Rock Guitars), but we have structured most of the program around hearing from the girls in their own way.

Why now?
The idea for the summit came about while watching the Inauguration earlier this year. Because Malia and Sasha Obama are tweens, it makes sense that the First Lady is interested in issues affecting tween girls. As we run one of the largest social networking sites for girls ages ten to fifteen, we have unique insight into the hearts and minds of tween girls and can offer them an opportunity to come together on this special day. (www.AllyKatzz.com is a SAFE, 100% monitored social networking site that gives girls a place to be heard. It is as cool as "young adult" sites, but SAFE for girls ages 10-15 because every word and photo is reviewed before they are posted on the site.) By holding an event where girls can speak up and be heard on the issues that matter to them, we can help be an advocate for tweens. Tweens can’t vote, but they can have an impact on change.

Who should attend?
Girls who want to change the tables by speaking up and having adults listen should come to the Summit. They can speak out at the podium, by drawing a picture, or writing on the “White House wall”. The Tween Summit is 100% free for girls to attend (thanks to our generous sponsors), and space is still available (you can register at www.TweenSummit.com. The event is open to all girls ages 9 to 14 and will be held at the Capital Hilton on Saturday, October 10. Parents are also welcome, and there is a separate agenda for them. The day will end with a special concert featuring Cymphonique, WOW, Brooke White, and Comic Book Heroes.

See you on the 10th!

Twixt Hanging Out at the Tween Summit

We were hanging out at the Tween Summit this Saturday where Twixt was the only local sponsor. The day was all about tween girls: what tweens want, their dreams, and what they want to see from the government, parents, schools, and society.

There were also tons of cool companies on hand to showcase what's new and cool for tweens including PotteryBarn Teen (shout out to Aimee who was SO much fun to hang out with!), JSYK (the new celeb news and sightings site for tweens by AOL), the Womens' Sports Foundation, Daisy Rock Guitars, Sharpie, and more.

Twixt WAS the goody bag at the Tween Summit. These amazing swag bags - each girl got to bring home two bags full of loot - contained goodies from PB Teen, Electronic Arts, Moxie, Fundex, FlipOutz, and more! Look how happy these girls are with their goody bags!

Exclusive Interview with WOW at Tween Summit

We had the good fortune of interviewing the very colorful band WOW during the Tween Summit in Washington, DC this weekend. These young men, Frankie, Jake, Kyron, Eddie and Michael, performed during the Tween Concert to a screaming, nearly hysterical, crowd of tween girls. They invited the audience up onto the stage during their last two songs which was very cool of them. This was WOW's first performance in DC, and they have four new fans in our house.

As you can see from our photos, WOW's signature look is BRIGHT! Jake described his pants as "highlighter pants", and all of the boys were especially proud of their custom, crystal-encrusted Pumas (although they did say they were very heavy).

When asked why they chose to journey to Washington for the Summit, they said they wanted to show their support girls who wanted to stand up and make a difference. "We love the tweens," said Michael. WOW had this message for Washington tweens:

"Always believe in yourself."
"You CAN make a difference."
"Any moment can change your life."
"Your voice is important."

Good stuff.

Their new song, Goosebumps, is released today.

Twixt Interviews Debby Ryan at Tween Summit!

We had an opportunity to sit down with Disney star Debby Ryan at the Tween Summit here in Washington, DC this past Saturday. When asked why she chose to participate at the Summit, she said that she was inspired to come here because "Tweens are usually overlooked, but they have SUCH strong opinions. They want to know how to change things, and they have big dreams." "So often teens lose the drive that they had when they were tweens", said Debby, but if tweens are empowered to make change, then they change everything. Debby dished on what inspires the songs she writes, her personal fashion style (black and silver; casual), her fave candy (Milky Way), and the make-up items she's obsessed with (Mac's Lip Conditioner and Dr Pepper Lip Smackers) to our tween reporter, Maya - check out the video here (and more video interviews with Debby Ryan and tweens at JSYK:

Tween Celebs at Tween Town Hall in LA March 13

Ally Katzz' Tween Town Hall (a follow-up to the Tween Summit held in DC last October) convenes for the afternoon tomorrow at UCLA, and several tween celebrities have signed up to attend, including Demi Lovato's little sister Madison de la Garza and Anna Maria Perez de la Tagle (from Camp Rock and Fame).

As at the Summit, tween girls will discuss issues important to them, including community service and ways to make an impact. For a great take on what the Tween Town Hall promises, check out the post on our friend Shaping Youth's blog. And another of our friends, Rosalind Wiseman, is also speaking. Should be a great afternoon!

Addressing The Issues Facing Women and Girls on the World Stage

We've just learned about an amazing organization that is working to highlight the issues facing women and girls worldwide, but they're doing it in a very different way: by mirroring the structure of the G20 Summit and addressing economic factors (such as economic freedom, health, education, issues facing adolescent girls, and gender equality, poverty and economic growth) that can raise up women and girls around the world. The Girls20Summit had its first meeting in Toronto last year (the site of last year's G20 Summit) and is meeting again in Paris this fall (in the same country as this year's G20 Summit). It brings together 20 young women from around the world "to encourage G8 and G20 leaders to elevate the importance of political empowerment and economic freedom for girls and women in developed and developing nations."

"The Girls20 Summit is modeled after the G20 Summit and will convene one girl from each G20 country plus one girl from the African Union chair country (Equatorial Guinea). Delegates will come together two weeks before the G20 Leaders to discuss, debate and design innovative ideas." One young woman will be chosen from applicants to represent each of the following G20 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK, the USA, a representative of the European Union, and a representative from the African Union Chair country, Equatorial Guinea.

If you know a young woman 18-20 years old interested in working with this organization, she can apply online to become a Girls20Summit Delegate. Applications are due April 15th, and the Girls20Summit will be held in Paris, October 18 - 21, 2011.

This organization has some heavyweight powers supporting it including Melinda Gates, the Clinton Foundation, the NIKE Foundation, the World Bank, and Goldman Sachs.

The Beacon Street Girls Book Launch Party at Twixt!

Twixt hosted the Book Launch for the Beacon Street Girls' newest book, Sweet Thirteen this weekend, and Washington tweens had a blast! The party was the day after the Tween Summit, and so many of our new friends from the Summit came. We even had one BSG fan travel all the way from Richmond, VA for the event!

Girls enjoyed treats, posed for pics with Maeve on the Red Carpet, purchased the new book (available at Twixt first, thanks to our friends at Politics and Prose, the BEST bookstore in DC!), and took home amazing swag bags full of loot from BSG and Ottile and Lulu.

Girls at the event were treated to a workshop on tween skincare by Deborah Hernan, founder of an AMAZING new line of skin and hair care products called Ottile and Lulu. All Ottile and Lulu products smell and feel great and are made of natural ingredients, clinically tested by a dermatologist, cruelty-free, and are devoid of all those chemicals that are bad for skin (parabens, SLS, phthalates, etc.). Our tweens are huge fans of their Feel Good Shampoo and Body Wash, rosewater-scented Clean Skin Face Wipes, and so-cool-looking-she'll-never-lose-it lip balm with SPF 20.

Here's what Addie Swartz, CEO of BeTween Productions and creator of BSG, has to say about the new book: “Sweet Thirteen, the 16th book in the Beacon Street Girls series, shows girls first-hand that it’s not about how much money you have or how big a party you can throw, but rather how real friends and living within your means are the true gifts to celebrate.”

Have you read the new BSG book, Sweet Thirteen? What do you think?

The Book Launch Party was co-sponsored by Twixt, Beacon Street Girls, AllyKatzz.com, and Ottile and Lulu.

It Takes a Village: No Name Calling Week is January 25-29, 2010

No Name-Calling Week was inspired by a young adult novel entitled "The Misfits" by James Howe. The book tells the story of four best friends trying to survive the seventh grade in the face of all too frequent taunts based on their weight, height, intelligence, and sexual orientation/gender expression. Hmmm . . . sound familiar?!?!

Motivated by the inequities they see around them, the "Gang of Five" (as they are known) creates a new political party during student council elections and run on a platform aimed at wiping out name-calling of all kinds. Though they lose the election, they win the support of the school's principal for their cause and their idea for a "No Name-Calling Day" at school.

No Name-Calling Week was created by GLSEN and Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing and consists of over 40 national partner organizations. The first No Name-Calling Week in schools across the nation took place March 1-5, 2004; this year, it will take place the week of January 25-29, 2010. The project seeks to focus national attention on the problem of name-calling in schools, and to provide students and educators with the tools and inspiration to launch an on-going dialogue about ways to eliminate name-calling in their communities. The focus is on grades 5 through 8 - you know, those awkward middle-school/tween years.

You can get more information on this project on their website, www.nonamecalling.org, and download free materials on how to stop bullying in our communities. We blogged about bullying before (this is one of Demi Lovato's big causes), and we also covered this topic during the Tween Summit last fall. It takes a village, people, so check out this site and get involved!

Glee Star Jane Lynch To Speak in DC About Tweens and Texting

The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is holding a public forum on the mobile culture, tweens, cyberbullying, sexting, and more this Tuesday at McKinley Technology High School. The forum is called "Generation Mobile" and will feature Glee star Jane Lynch, tween parenting expert Rosalind Wiseman, and one of our favorite media site, Commonsense Media.

According to their site, the FCC is hosting the forum to bring "together teens, parents, educators and experts" to talk together about commonsense and responsible uses of technology. The forum will be split into two parts: FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski will hosting the first panel “Generation Mobile Speaks” featuring teens, parents and educators. The second panel, “Ask the Experts About Generation Mobile” will feature experts from SafetyWeb, Facebook, Sprint and other major mobile and technology players.

Youth and media has been in the news a great deal this year, and Washington has seen its share of such events (including Geena Davis speaking earlier this year at the "Healthy Media for Youth Summit"). This event is open to the public - for details, see the FCC website here and also streaming live at www.fcc.gov/live. You can also follow the event via Twitter using the #genmobile hashtag.
