Tween Band Opening For Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan, music superstar and founder of the Lilith Fair tour, is used to discovering new talent. This year, she's introducing the world to some very young talent: a tween girl band called von Grey.

The band is a foursome of four sisters ages 10 to 15 from Atlanta. All are classically trained in different instruments (they play guitar, mandolin, cello, keyboards, and violin), and the result is a singer-songwriter fusion of pop, classic rock and country. .  The girls practice a lot: about 20 hours a week in addition to their regular school schedules.

We can't make the show in Atlanta on August 5, but we wish them well!

July is Rickey Month - A Tween-Friendly Version

We were surprised to learn that Washington, D.C. has a native cocktail: the Rickey. This drink was invented about a hundred years ago in the District to help alleviate the hot, muggy Washington summers. Our summer thus far has been incredibly hot and humid, and we thought it'd be fun to make non-alcoholic Rickey's for our D.C. tweens.

Here are a few recipes we found for tween-appropriate Rickey's:
  • Virgin Lime Rickey:  Pour 1 oz. lime juice over a glass filled with ice, add club soda to fill, stir, and then stir in one dash Grenadine.
  • Pure Lime Rickey: Shake together 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice, 1 oz. simple syrup, and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters. Pour into a glass, top with club soda and garnish with a lime peel spiral.
  • Raspberry Lime Rickey: Fill a tall glass with ice and squeeze one lime over the ice. Fill glass nearly to the top with carbonated water, and top with raspberry syrup (you can use other flavored syrups such as lemon, orange, or cherry - our tweens love Monin syrups - a local distributor we've used before is Clear Mountain Coffee on Brookville Road in Silver Spring, MD).
Stay cool!

President Obama on Raising Tweens - "It's Just a Great Age"

President Obama was on The View today and talked about how he spends time with his family. Of his recent trip to Maine, he spoke about how much he enjoyed spending time with First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama:

“We went on bike rides and hikes and the girls are getting old enough now where they’re not quite teenagers yet, so they still like you, but they are full of opinions and ideas and observations and it’s just a great age."

We totally agree - that's tween parenting in a nutshell.

Jonas Brothers Launch New Tween Network With AOL: Cambio

AOL  and the Jonas Group today launched a new tween and teen network today called Cambio. (Jonas Group is the family management firm that handles the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, and the Wonder Girls, and is run by the Jonas Brothers' father.)

Cambio is envisioned as a entertainment and lifestyle network. We're not quite sure how it fits in with JYSK, Just Jared Jr. or Twist, but it seems to be remarkably similar. The site will cover the band's "Road Dogs" softball team, sync up with the launch of Camp Rock 2, and other Jonas activities.

The Jonas Brothers Perform the Beatles: Behind the Scenes at the White House

As reported earlier, the Jonas Brothers were at the White House last month to celebrate Paul McCartney as he accepted the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. They covered the Beatles "Baby You Can Drive My Car" while the President, First Lady and First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama rocked out in the front row of the East Room. This concert will be broadcast on PBS stations tonight as part of the "In Performance at the White House" series, and the White House released the following video footage of the group behind the scenes at the event.

A Classical Take on Lady Gaga: The Vitamin String Quartet

We *heart* this: a string quartet version of Lady Gaga's hits including Poker Face, Paparazzi, and Just Dance. The Vitamin String Quartet is a collective of classical musicians in L.A., and their work was been recognized by Disney (they were commissioned to contribute a track on an all-star tribute to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas) - they've even done an album from the music from Glee! They apply "a rock n' roll attitude to classical technique" - way cool.

Greyson, it looks like you're in good company.

Their Lady Gaga album is available on iTunes.

New Tween Style for Back to School? Willow Smith as Trendsetter With Lady Gaga Ear

Is this a sign of a new tween trend?: at The Karate Kid premiere in Paris, Willow Smith, star of the American Girl movie, "Kit Kittredge" and sister of Karate Kid movie star Jaden Smith, sported a silver painted ear. An homage to Lady Gaga perhaps?

Her avant garde haircut and stunning visage already sets her apart from the crowd - and we *heart* her rocker-chic fashion choices (did you catch her Carrie-esque ring?). Unique style must be what happens when one follows the beat of your own fashion drummer and don't cow to group-think - Willow and Jaden Smith are home-schooled.

First Tweens Sasha and Malia Obama Gifted Wellies by British PM

First Tweens Sasha and Malia Obama were given very cool rainboots (or "Wellingtons" as the British call them) by Samantha Cameron, wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron, during the Prime Minister's visit to Washington, DC last week. The boots are made by Hunter, the Royal Wellington provider, and Malia got a pair in pink, and Sasha got the purple ones. Great colors!

Will you put Wellies on your back-to-school shopping list? (BTW, we wrote about Hunter Wellies for tweens way back in 2008!)

Part Three of the First Tweens Summer: Malia and Sasha Obama Visit Maine and Florida

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama continue their summer vacation plans in Maine and Florida (they began their summer break in Los Angeles and then went to Toronto, Canada in June).

The First Family spent a weekend exploring Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine two weeks ago, and Malia Obama will go to summer camp in Maine later in August. Acadia National Park is on Mount Desert Island, and the First Family stayed at the Bar Harbor Regency. They spent some spa time at the Bar Harbor Club and then had lunch at The Claremont Inn. After lunch, the tweens toured the Bass Harbor Lighthouse with the Coast Guard Station Chief in the National Park and hiked the Ship Harbor Trail along the rocky shore.

On August 14th the Obama family will travel to the Gulf Coast of Florida for another weekend trip and may return to Martha's Vineyard for a week at the beach later in August - stay tuned for more details!

Unlike last summer when the First Family took longer European trips, this year the Obamas are staying closer to home and taking weekend trips together.

First Tweens, First Jobs, and Allowances

President Obama certainly speaks to our national economy almost daily, but this morning he addressed tween economic issues - that is allowances and babysitting.

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama each receive $1.00/week for their allowance, and the President and First Lady are teaching the tweens about saving, compound interest, and bank accounts (both girls have their own savings account). In a speech today, President Obama responded to questions about the financial advice he gives to his daughters. He said, "It's a great question, because -- because so many of the problems that we see had to do with the fact that just basic calculations about compound interest and -- and what that means, you know, kids aren't taught that. . . .  "They're starting to get old enough where they may be able to earn some money babysitting."

Our eldest tween began babysitting this summer, and it's been quite the topic of dinner conversation: how much to spend vs save, how to manage the unpredictability of her income, what she's permitted to spend without parental review, etc.

Does your tween receive/earn an allowance? How does she earn it? Do allowances vary by age in your house?

First Tweens Are Neatnik Kids

Malia and Sasha Obama, the First Tweens, keep their rooms tidy - or so says the British Prime Minister, David Cameron. Mr. Cameron is in Washington, D.C. to visit with President Obama and got to tour the private quarters. He says that he hopes his two kids, Nancy, age 7, and Arthur, age 4, will take inspiration from the First Tweens.

We have not seen photos of the girls' rooms in the White House, but our tweens would LOVE to know how they've decorated!

More details here.

2010 Tunes: Summer Concert Series For Tweens

Summer is a time for concerts, but with concert ticket prices through the roof, it can be financially challenging to go. Your tween may be interested in some of the smaller (and more affordable!) summer rock shows that we found:
  • Camplified is touring several camp sites up and down the East Cost this summer. The tour just kicked off and features the Australian Justin Bieber, Cody Simpson
  • The Vans Warped Tour features up and coming artists and has the added fun of being sponsored by Wonka (sugar anyone?)
  • Jeans Bring Dreams is a benefit concert with a limited tour schedule (mostly West Coast) but a great mission: the price of admission is a pair of new or lightly used jeans that are donated to tweens and teens in need. The concert features new artists including some of our faves, Keely Marshall, Pink Army, R5, and Amber Lily.

American Girl Tries Again to Create an Online Club for Tweens

Some of you may remember the American Girl Club from several years back (I think it closed in 2005) - it was one of the earlier attempts at creating an online community for tween girls that was a closed, safe community (strict age access restrictions, no personally identifiable information, etc.). Since it closed, a few other online communities for tween girls have launched (Chica Circle, iTwixie, AllyKatzz, and Miss O and Friends), and a few have closed (R.I.P. Club BSG). A new social networking site - a Facebook for kids - called Everloop is due to launch soon as well.

Today American Girl (now owned by Mattel) launched a new community for tween girls called InnerStar University. It's a virtual world - a campus, actually - where girls and their dolls can play games, earn awards, etc. There's homework help in the Starlight Library, digital dress-up in the Shopping Square, and discussion communities on nature (in the Blue Sky Nature Center) and water sports (in the Starfire Boathouse). Unlike the older AG club, this one requires purchase of a new My American Girl doll to join.

If you join, let us know what you think about it!

Taylor Momsen and Lola - the Faces of Madonna's Material Girl Line

The star of the Gossip Girl t.v. series, Taylor Momsen, can now add cover girl to her resume - she's been chosen as the new face of Lola Leon's and mom Madonna's clothing line, Material Girl. Ms. Momsen is just 16 years old and is also in a rock band, The Pretty Reckless.

We wrote earlier about this new clothing from Lola and Madonna here.

Lady Gaga As Hello Kitty?

Calling all Hello Kitty fans!

We just saw this photo of Lady Gaga styled as Hello Kitty - complete with the massive round eyes (no, these weren't done with the scary round contact lenses - they're painted on her eyelids - Ms. Gaga did the entire photoshoot with her eyes shut).

Totally Gaga.

The Ultimate Tween Bedroom: the Bedroom Makeover on the Set of iCarly

Nick's popular tween t.v. show, "iCarly", stars Miranda Cosgrove as Carly, as the star of her own Internet t.v. show (I know, it's a show about a show . . kind of like "Sonny With a Chance" on Disney Channel. Are you sensing a theme too?). The main set is Carly's living room which is pretty cool on its own - it features those super cute Gummi Bear Night Lights that we wrote about years ago.

Well, now fans will get a first-ever look at Carly's ultimate tween bedroom - the show's latest storyline will be about her current room getting burned down in a brotherly accident and how she gets to set up a new candy-themed tween hangout space.  Our friends at Jellio (who created the Gummi Bear Night Lights) got to work on this set too - check out the Gummi Bear Chandelier! (Note: the chandelier shown on the set is a limited edition large size (31" in diameter), but a smaller version (18" in diameter) is available for sale on the Jellio website. Warning: it comes with a piece of art price tag: $1800, reflecting the months of work it takes the artist to make each one.)

The Australian Justin Bieber: Cody Simpson

Have you heard about this kid as yet? Don't worry - you will.

Cody Simpson is a young tween singing sensation from Down Under (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia to be exact) with an R-and-B / Pop sound. He's sort of a surfer-dude version of Justin Bieber, and he's making his first U.S. tour this July to camps up and down the East Coast as part of the Camplified tour.

His breakout hit is "iYiYi" (said like "EYE-y-eye-y-eye"), and the video is above and on our YouTube channel - check it out and let us know what you think.

A Glee-esque Movie for Tweens: Standing Ovation Opens Today

I haven't seen this as yet, but a new movie for tween girls opens today: Standing Ovation. It chronicles the hopes and dreams of five middle school girls entering a dance video competition and pits the average girls against the mean girls- a very Glee-esque storyline.
If you see this film, please post your review below - it looks like it's not coming to the D.C. area.

First Tween Malia Obama Will Go to Sleep Away Camp in Maine

Is your tween going to sleep away camp this summer? Malia Obama will be this summer for the first time - she's going to a month-long sleep away camp in Maine in August (the President himself spilled the beans during a recent speech). The First Family leave today for vacation on Mount Desert Island in Maine where they will explore another National Park, Acadia National Park (they had previously toured Yellowstone National Park last summer).

Tweens Dance Video to Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith's "Never Say Never"

From The Karate Kid movie (the new one, starring Jaden Smith) comes the hit song "Never Say Never" by Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith. We just came across this great video of tweens from Ontario, Canada showing other tweens their dance video to the song. (BTW, these videos are a great antidote to the recent "Put a Ring on It" tween video scandal.)

Two of the girls, Katrina and Sloane, also have a website and YouTube channel dedicated to promoting healthy and active lifestyles amongs tweens. Their videos are really cool - they walk through how to do a cartwheel, aerials, other dance videos, and more. We've got a link to them and other cool videos for tweens on our YouTube channel as well.

Malia Obama Just Got Braces

So your tween can rest assured knowing that even the President's daughter needs to wear braces too. President Obama said during a speech (see the video from ABC News below) that he liked that Malia got braces because "she looks like a kid - she was looking too grown up" otherwise.

Happy 12th Birthday to Malia Obama!

The First Tween celebrated her 12th birthday here in Washington this past weekend. Malia Obama spent the day with her family at the Presidential retreat Camp David in Maryland and enjoyed a birthday barbeque along with family members of the armed services as a White House Fourth of July event. The 12-year old Ms. Obama must always share her birthday with America, but as the daughter of a sitting President, the day itself is perhaps more shadowed than in the past. But certainly the perks of having your dad as President more than make up for it - what with backstage tours of the Harry Potter movie set, box seats at the NBA Championships, and more.

The latest perk was a behind the scenes look at the latest Broadway musical to hit the Kennedy Center: Mary Poppins (the show runs July 1 to August 22). First Lady Michelle Obama and First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama toured the set after the first show. The birthday girl got to bring friend along to the show and was serenaded by the cast with, of course, "Happy Birthday!"

This year, the First Tween's birthday celebrations have been much lower-key than in years past - Sasha Obama's 9th birthday was a simple pizza party at a local restaurant.

The Newest Tween Fashion Blogger: Lourdes Leon

Lourdes Leon, who goes by Lola, is the 13 year old daughter of Madonna (no last name needed). She joins reigning tween fashion blogger Tavi in launching a blog all about style. Her first entry was last week, and she writes with a genuine tween voice (that being lots of ALL CAPS, run-on's, and stream-of-consciousness musings - witness the opening line): "Helluuur thurrrr, I’m Lola and this is my first blog entry so it’s kind of like ummmm…. I’m just going to use this blog entry to tell y’all a little bit about myself. I’m 13 and I’ll be 14 in October, so I can’t wait for that because I am FINALLY allowed to dye my hair… THANK YOU MOTHER!"

Be forewarned: this blog IS connected to a commercial enterprise: it is part of the Material Girl brand, a line of tween clothing designed by Madonna and Ms. Leon available at Macy's this fall, but we found it to be mostly a style blog and less advertising for the brand.

Will you allow your tween to read this blog? Ours have and think it is tres cool.
