How Fashion Designers Would Dress the First Tweens for the Inauguration

WWD invited fourteen designers to sketch a gown for the First Lady to wear to the Inaugration, and most designers included designs for First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama. Check out the stylish sketches here.

International Women's Day, Sandra Fluke, and First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama

By now the story of Georgetown University Law Student Sandra Fluke's testimony before Congress and Rush Limbaugh's subsequent treatment of her has reach most our our readers. On today, International Women's Day, we were heartened to hear about President Obama's call to Ms. Fluke thanking her for serving as a positive civic role model for Malia and Sasha Obama.

Here is what the President said in his press conference (and you can view the video below):

". . . All good folks can agree that the remarks that were made don’t have any place in the public discourse. And you know, the reason I called Ms. Fluke is because I thought about my daughters, and one of the things I want them to do as they get older is to engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on. I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way.”

“And I do not want them attacked or called horrible names because they are being good citizens, and I wanted Sandra to know that I thought her parents should be proud of her, and that we want to send a message to all of our young people that being part of a democracy involves argument and disagreements and debate, and we want you to be engaged, and there’s a way to do it that doesn’t involve you being demeaned and insulted, particularly when you are a private citizen.”

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama Release Sea Turtles into the Wild

The Obama family is back in the President's home state of Hawaii for their annual Christmas break. This year, First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama got to do a bit of real-life marine biology on their holiday: the girls released four green sea turtles into the wild at Sea Life Park, a marine sanctuary in Oahu that is the only place in the U.S. that raises green sea turtles in captivity. The 18-month old turtles were born at Sea Life Park and are released into the bay as part of program to re-populate this threatened species.

About First Tween Sasha Obama's Dress From the Official Portrait

We've just learned that the pretty fuchsia and silver dress worn by First Tween Sasha Obama in the Obama Family Official Portrait is designed by BB Dakota, a mother-daughter design company. This dress is from a women's line, so it's not in children's sizes (and as we know, tweens come in all shapes and sizes - some older tweens are wearing youth sizes 12 and 14 while others are in womens or petites). It's available online (and on sale!) for $55. We certain this will be a popular choice for New Year's Parties among tweens.

Michelle on Obama on Facebook: "Why would we want to have a whole bunch of people who we don't know knowing our business? That doesn't make much sense."

Honestly, this is refreshing to hear from a fellow parent of tween girls. In the Obama family's only print interview of the season, People magazine asked them about their social networking and television usage. First Lady Michelle Obama says of their decision NOT to let First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama use Facebook, "Why would we want to have a whole bunch of people who we don't know knowing our business? That doesn't make much sense."

Their tweens are young yet, and Facebook's stated policy is that a user must be 13 or older - but that hasn't stopped millions of tweens from actively using Facebook.

With the winter break upon us, tweens will be online in droves - here are our tips for keeping your tween safe online this season:

Our House Rules for Digitally Literate Girls:

(You can read the full interview with Gayle Trotter that ran in the Alliance for Women in Media "Special Report on Digital Literacy for Women and Girls" here.)

Gayle: How can you let girls become digitally proficient without being exposed to the trash on the Internet?

MsTwixt: In a word: slowly. Kids should be taught to go online in stages appropriate to their age, and parents need to monitor their children’s activity online.

Here are some tips for parents:

· Create a family technology policy. Articulate clearly what your expectations are with respect to how mobile phones, television viewing, Internet browsing, YouTube watching, texting, etc., are acceptable for your family. You should share and discuss this policy with your kids so that they are clear on the behavior expectations and the reasons why. The ethics you enforce in real life absolutely extend to your kids' digital lives.

· Trust but verify. There are settings on every major browser that enable “safe search” — which is essentially search result listings of questionable sites or sites with adult content being blocked from display. Clearly this is a form of censorship, and it’s not too different from the settings on one’s cable box that block out channels based on a parent’s preference.

· Parents should check the browsing history on all computers in the home regularly. Not only is this a list of where your kids have gone online, but it provides insight into the kind of information they are looking for and what they really use the Internet for (so you can tell if “online research” includes Facebook or not).

· Parents should “Google” their kid’s names a few times a year to keep tabs on what information strangers can find about your child.

· With mobile phones, most major carriers offer text plans that not only help you to budget text usage but also monitor the texts. Some carriers charge a fee while others do not — it varies a great deal. You can also look for a plan option that backs-up the information on a phone (very helpful for the address book feature) and monitor photos taken with the phone.

· One rule in our household is that all browsing MUST happen at the dining table or living room; computers are not allowed in bedrooms. Publicly viewed screens have a “fresh air” effect on browsing.

· If your kids are under the age of 13 and want to join Facebook, consider setting up a Facebook account for the entire family instead of each member of the family. Check your privacy settings frequently on Facebook (the default settings change often).

· Another household rule with mobile phones that you might find helpful: store all phones in a central place (i.e., NOT in the child’s room). Not only does it help to mitigate the morning scramble and ensure sleep, but it prevents the late-night, unmonitored text sessions.

· An ostrich strategy won’t work when it comes to technology. If you don’t know how to text, learn; if you don’t know what Facebook or Twitter are, spend some time poking around on those sites; and if you don’t know what you don’t know, ask other parents what they’re monitoring online.

· Some of the best ways to parent include modeling the behaviors we want to see in our children. While we often think of that in the context of manners, speech, and ethics, the same applies to online behaviors.

· Focus on the positives of technology and what it offers to your kids; girls especially need to be comfortable with technology in today’s world.

Tips for teaching kids to go online safely:

· Kids need to know that just because they read something online, it is not necessarily true. They should learn which sites are trusted for research information and to check the footnotes, bibliography and sources for any online research.

· Kids should keep a running list of online bookmarks for any research project. Sites such as Delicious make this easy to both save and organize, and it’s incredibly helpful to have a list of their sources available with a single click.

· Avoid using both their first and last name together for any login, username, or screename.

· NEVER enter their address online – this should ONLY be done by a parent.

· Sit down together in front of the computer to research something. This summer we were looking for a new tank filter for our turtle, and this exercise was really helpful for our girls to see how we searched for information, the kinds of terms and phrases we used, and which sites we chose to visit and which ones we chose not to and why. The parent should narrate what they’re doing and thinking at each step in the process. We do exactly this kind of task-based testing in the development world when developing applications, and it is extremely valuable. This same exercise can also be done when going onto the family Facebook account and reading through Wall posts, viewing photos, finding friends, etc.

· If your child really wants to explore a social network online, there are kid-only sites such as Everloop, Imbee, and Togetherville that are tailored just for them. Parents can feel secure in knowing that these communities have live monitoring and are COPPA-compliant (COPPA is the Child Online Privacy and Protection Act).

· Kids should understand that information posted online has a very long “half-life.” This means not only that anyone can find that goofy photo they took with their friends junior year, but that photo will come up when someone searches for them 5 or 10 years from now — and folks they care about (such as college admission officers, job interviewers, scholarship committees, coaches) will most assuredly search for them online. This is a tough reality to confront as it means that all of the trials and tribulations of growing up and the mistakes that come with it are on public display. We can’t stuff that genie back in the bottle, but being cognizant of it is vital.

· Be picky. Kids should be very selective in which sites they chose to use for research and which communities they choose to join. Discuss with them the merits of one social network over another, why one source for research is better than another, etc. With such vastness of information, it's important to learn to filter it well. They should be selective with their time and what information they share online — VERY selective.

First Tweens Cheer Justin Bieber at "Christmas in Washington" Show

Meeting Justin Bieber is quickly becoming de rigueur for the First Tweens. Malia and Sasha Obama again welcomed Justin Bieber to the annual "Christmas in Washington" show this weekend at the National Building Museum. The Biebs was the big tween draw last night, but other tween favorite performers included Victoria Justice, Jennifer Hudson, Cee Lo Green, Conan O'Brien, and The Band Perry.

The First Tweens were dressed in colorful holiday attire for the show: Malia Obama wore a bright yellow silk dress by the fashion house "Elizabeth and James" (which parents may recall as being the clothing line developed by former tween stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) with black tights and flats accessorized by a long chain necklace, and Sasha Obama wore a ballet-inspired lilac tulle dress with plum-colored tights and metallic flats.

This was the 30th Annual "Christmas in Washington" event, and it benefits the Children's Medical Center. Mr. Bieber has also performed at the White House Easter Egg Roll and at the 2010 Christmas in Washington event. You can tune into the TNT channel broadcast of "Christmas in Washington" this Friday, December 16th at 8pm EST - or click here for your local broadcast time.

First Tweens Cheer BigTimeRush at National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Malia and Sasha Obama attended the 89th National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Ellipse last night. On hand to perform "Beautiful Christmas" was Nickelodeon Band Big Time Rush, and the First Tweens cheered their performance and bopped along. The girls continued their sartorial love of color and wore bright, double-breasted coats in deep blue (Sasha) and black with red piping (Malia) - both girls also sported skinny jeans.

First Tweens Thanksgiving Traditions and Holiday Fashion

As is tradition, the President pardons a turkey every year at Thanksgiving. The Obama White House this year pardoned two turkeys (named Liberty and Peace), and First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama were on hand for the ceremony. They're growing up before our eyes, and their fashion sense remains every colorful and chic (check out Sasha's shoes!).

First Tween Malia Obama Marks 9/11 Anniversary With Community Service

First Tween Malia Obama marked the tenth anniversary of September 11th by volunteering at a local soup kitchen. She joined her father, President Obama, in preparing meals for the needy; they packaged chicken and rice gumbo at the DC Central Kitchen. Their efforts echo the call to service that spread across the country in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. We think this is such a positive way to mark a difficult date.

Part One of the First Tweens' Summer: Malia and Sasha Obama Visit Universal Studios, iCarly Set

The First Tweens are officially on summer vacation, and they've kicked it off by accompanying mom, First Lady Michelle Obama, on a trip to California.

Malia and Sasha Obama were in Los Angeles on Monday. They took a VIP tour of Universal Studios Hollywood and rode on several popular rides including  "King Kong 360 3-D", Jurassic Park, Shrek 4D,  the Simpsons ,and Revenge of the Mummy. Sasha Obama, whose tenth birthday was June 10th, reportedly wanted to ride the Mummy ride twice - and did.

Also on Monday the First Lady visited the set of iCarly to film a segment for the show about the hardships military families face. On the show, Carly is upset that her dad (an Air Force colonel who has been deployed) isn't home for a birthday, so her friends break the rules to set up a web chat with him. "We are big fans of iCarly," Mrs. Obama said. "Well, let’s say I’m the coolest mom on the face of the planet."

The First Lady plays herself in the episode and said this about her role: "The story line is very sweet. iCarly..they have a webcast, and Carly is a military kid, and that's always been a part of the script. That's been a part of their situation. Her father has been deployed, and it's just a way for us to recognize her challenges as well as how her friends are stepping up to support her. So I'm pretty excited about it." Mrs. Obama's appearance is to promote Joining Forces, an initiative aimed at increasing awareness and support for military families.

After the taping, iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove tweeted: "Worked with Michelle Obama today. She's one awesome funny lady. We were so nervous and she just made everybody feel so comfortable #honored."

Later that night there was a fundraiser held at the home of the interior designer who decorated the White House for the Obama family (including the First Tweens' rooms), Michael S. Smith. After the fundraiser the Obama women had a late night pizza dinner at Pizzeria Mozza (the same spot they visited the last time they were in L.A.).

Tuesday (today), the First Tweens traveled with their mom to Berkeley, California (MsTwixt is an alumna of U.C. Berkeley - go Bears!). The First Lady spoke at a fundraiser featuring breakfast prepared by Edible Schoolyard founder Chef Alice Waters at the historic Claremont Hotel in the Berkeley Hills. No word on what Malia and Sasha Obama did in Berkeley, but we hope that they toured the beautiful U.C. campus and visited historic Tilden Park (the Tilden Merry-Go-Round is our tweens' favorite).  UPDATE: Malia and Sasha Obama also visited the Alcatraz Island prison complex on Thursday - they went via a private hovercraft and got to take turns driving the boat.

Next week the First Tweens will visit Africa as part of Mrs. Obama's official visits to Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa and Gaberone, Botswana. That trip focuses on youth leadership, education, health and wellness.

Sasha Obama Celebrates 10th Birthday at Georgetown Cupcake

First Tween Sasha Obama is ten years old today and celebrated her birthday at Georgetown Cupcake. The younger Miss Obama and her sister, Malia Obama, and several friends had a birthday party at the original Georgetown Cupcake location on Prospect Street in Georgetown (which is now used as their television studio for their show, "DC Cupcakes"). The owners of the cupcakery were on hand for the party, and we imagine that decorating cupcakes was on the agenda. Last year, Sasha had her birthday party at California Pizza Kitchen (Hmm, do we sense a theme? Our tweens think she made really fun choices in her party locations.)

Local Georgetown journalist Carol Joynt broke this story, and she has more photos on her blog here.

Happy 10th birthday to Sasha!

Photos by Carol Joynt. (Malia Obama is the tallest girl walking into the bakery, and Sasha is holding the bouquet of flowers. We love the huge bunch of pink balloons decorating the party spot.)

A Tween's Report on the 2011 White House Easter Egg Roll

We were fortunate enough to receive tickets to this year's White House Easter Egg Roll, and one of our tweens wrote this report of our experience:

The White House Easter Egg Roll 2011 was an amazing experience. Despite the heat and long lines, the event was amazing. Thousands of families milled around the White House Ellipse Garden in front of the White House participating in many activities, booths, and performances that the whole family could enjoy. The theme of this year's Roll was "Get Up And Go!" which partners Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" movement. The booths were all about staying healthy and eating right by showing parents (and kids) new recipes and ways to get active through fun activities.

Being an Easter Egg Roll, there had to be one as one of the many activities. The roll was directly in front of the White House and allowed kids of all ages to try and roll a colorful egg to the Finish line first by hitting it with a spoon. The toddlers and younger kids just scooted the egg along with the help of their parents and occasionally got distracted and would run off with the egg in hand. However, the older kids flicked the egg across the grass with a fiery determination in their eyes. Another activity, inspired by the Easter Bunny, was called "Hop To It!" in which there was many types of jump rope contests for kids to try.

Families were not the only ones on the White House grounds, there was a large number of small children cartoon and storybook characters who were there to take pictures with the little kids. To name a few, there was Peter Rabbit, Curious George, Word Girl, Madeleine, Clifford, and Diego. Speaking of stories, the grandson of the author of Madeleine was there to read one of the Madeleine stories to the kids in the story area. Barrack Obama was there to, to read a story to the little kids. Willow Smith was also at the Roll to sing 21st Girl. Another performance took place there in the afternoon were a band called Mindless Behavior. They are a group of young teenagers who are friends in a band. They are all extremely talented in dancing and singing. While they performed, a woman was on the stage using sign-language to communicate the lyrics of the song to some of the deaf people in the crowd. I found this as an extremely kind and touching gesture. Towards the end of the event, Malia and Sasha Obama came out of the White House to enjoy the weather and watch the Mindless Behavior concert. As everyone was leaving, we were handed Easter inspired gifts: a colorful egg with the White House Easter Egg Roll logo on one side and Barack and Michelle Obama's signatures on the other, and a box of Peeps. The Roll of 2011 was a great and well-done event that will make this year's Easter one to remember.

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama in El Salvador

Continuing their visit to Latin America with their parents, Malia and Sasha Obama are visiting El Salvador today. They visited the President of El Salvador and his family at the Presidential Palace in San Salvador, met with school children from the United States of America School, and participated in a community service effort painting a mural for a health clinic at Superate, a local youth assistance program.

The First Family came to El Salvador after a visit to Chile, and prior to that they were in Brazil. In Santago, Chile, they took in a Chilean folk dance performance and concert at the Mirador Interactive Museum and met Chile's First Family at the La Moneda Palace.

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama in Brazil

Malia and Sasha Obama have accompanied their parents on their trip to Latin America. First stop: Brazil.

The First Tweens met with a Brazilian kids' soccer team, addressed a gathering of Youth Ambassadors, watched a "capoeira" performance (a Brazilian martial arts/dance form that is very athletic and acrobatic), and met with the Brazilian President and First Lady at the Palacio do Alvorada. So far they've been to Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, and the rest of the tour includes Chile and El Salvador. The girls won't miss any school because they are on Spring Break until the 28th.

First Tween Sasha Obama and Nick Jonas at Motown Tribute

The White House hosted a night of Motown music in honor of Black History Month last night, and First Tween Sasha Obama helped to dance the night away. Video from ABC News is below:

Stars who performed tributes to Motown greats included Nick Jonas (himself no stranger to the Obamas), Natasha Bedingfield, Sheryl Crow, Jordin Sparks, John Legend, and Amber Riley and Matt Salling from the cast of Glee. The President took a great deal of ribbing about his own stiff dance style from emcee Jamie Foxx, but he took it good-naturedly and danced with young Ms. Obama on the stage during "Dancing in the Streets."

As part of the First Lady's new initiative, "The Sound of Young America", Michelle Obama invited 100 local students in Washington to attend an educational workshop at the White House on the history of Motown. You can watch that video here.

Justin Bieber Voted MVP in NBA All-Star Celebrity Basketball Game

It was a big weekend for tweens and basketball: the President coached local tweens on Sasha Obama's basketball team yesterday morning, and Justin Bieber was voted the MVP at the All-Star Celebrity Basketball Game in Los Angeles.

Although much shorter than his teammates (who included Scottie Pippen and Rick Fox), the Biebs scored 8 points and had 4 assists and 2 rebounds Friday night. More details and photos here.

Mr. Bieber's team was coached by Lakers legend Magic Johnson, and he played alongside Modern Family's Ty Burrell (he plays clueless dad Phil on the show). The public voted on the MVP award, and the tween star recruited his legendary Twitter following to garner the most votes.

First Tweens Ski Vail This President's Day Weekend

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama are skiing in Vail, Colorado, over the Presidents' Day weekend. They are with their mother, First Lady Michelle Obama, and family friends. This is a "private family vacation" according to the First Lady's spokeswoman. They are reportedly staying at the Sebastian hotel in Vail.

President Obama did not join his family for this outing (he is not a skier) but instead filled in to coach Sasha Obama's basketball team when their regular coach had a conflict. The younger Ms. Obama usually plays at a local community center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. This is not the first time the Obama women have vacationed without the President: Mrs. Obama took the girls to Los Angeles this fall, and in the summer, the First Lady and Sasha visited Spain on their own.

The First Tweens have only recently tried skiing - they took their first ski trip last Presidents' weekend to a local resort about a hour from Washington at Ski Liberty in Carroll Valley, Pennsylvania. According to Liberty Mountain's Marketing Director, the First Lady says about skiing: “We discovered skiing. My girls had never been skiing. With a couple hours, you’re skiing.”

Do your tweens ski? Was it easy for them to learn?

First Tweens Sasha and Malia Obama Not Allowed on Facebook

If you've prohibited your tween to go on Facebook, you're in good company. As part of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" tour she has been making rounds on several television shows. On the Today Show this morning, she was asked if Malia and Sasha had Facebook pages.

Mrs. Obama said, "I think we're lucky that there are a lot of real constraints, things like Secret Service and stuff like that. I'm not a big fan of young kids having Facebook. It's not something they need, it's not necessary right now."  She added that the First Tweens may be permitted to create a Facebook page after they leave the White House.

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama Shine During Chinese State Visit

Last week Chinese President Hu Jintao made an official State Visit to Washington, D.C. and was honored by a State Dinner at the White House. First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama attended both events and made quite an impression on the Chinese President.

Nine year old Sasha Obama is learning Mandarin at school (she attends Sidwell Friends School) and got to practice her Chinese with President Hu. The younger Ms. Obama and her classmates attended the welcoming ceremony for President Hu on the White House lawn, and President Obama paused in the receiving line to introduce the Chinese President to his daughter.

Both Presidential daughters also attended the State Dinner later in the week, and the fashion world was abuzz with Malia Obama wardrobe at the event. The elder Ms. Obama wore a fun, sparkly dress by American designer Chris Benz. The dress was a beautiful shade of mermaid green, and the 12-year old made it age-appropriate by pairing it with a simple shrug sweater. Both Obama daughters looked beautiful at the event; no word on who designed Sasha Obama's black and gold dress.
