While most Dr. Seuss books are for kids younger than tweens, there are some titles that resonate regardless of age:
- The Lorax ("I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues")
- Oh, The Places You'll Go ("You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose")
- Horton Hears a Who ("A person is a person no matter how small")
Dr. Seuss', or Theodore Giesel's, birthday is March 2nd, and a movement is afoot to celebrate his birthday with a "Read Across America" service day. Here in Washington,
American University students will be reading to kids in the D.C. public schools. Or, you could organize a
Milk and Bookies event (which
we blogged about earlier) to gather books for organizations in need. Our tweens will celebrate by dressing in wacky stripes (like The Cat in the Hat) and reading to their younger siblings - what about yours?
