Tween stars the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato are headlining Arthur Ashe's Kids' Day at the U.S. Open tomorrow. The concert is sold out, but CBS is airing the entire show on Sunday, August 29th at noon EDT.
Also performing are David Archuleta, Cody Simpson, and The School Gryls, and it should be quite a show. The entire day's events include a tennis skills clinic hosted by the USTA and an autograph session with tennis champions in addition to the concert. Last year's show included performances by Justin Bieber and Honor Society.

Hmmm - Perez Hilton to Appear on Nickelodeon's Victorious?
We just wrote about social networking and tweens, and then learned that online gossip maven, Perez Hilton, is going to featured on the new Victorious episode airing this Friday night (Aug 27) - see video below. To be honest, I don't know if our tweens know who Perez Hilton is, but I would prefer that they not read his blog just yet.
What do you think?
Me thinks we have a new topic for the dinner table . . .

76% of Parents on Facebook Are Online Friends With Their Tween/Teen
A new survey by AOL and the Nielsen Company finds that "76% of parents with kids on Facebook, claim to have "friended" their teens, and 29% of teenagers are ready to "un-friend" their parents given the choice." Moms were more twice as likely to be un-friended than dads - which makes sense given that mothers check in more often than dads in online social networks.
We've written a lot about online networks and tweens ("A Facebook for Tweens? Everloop", "Maintaining Your Tweens Safety on Facebook", "Should Schools Block Social Networks?", "American Girls' Online Club for Tweens", cyber-bullying, "Miley Quits Twitter", and the horrific online smear campaign by boys at Landon School targeting girls), and we required our eldest tween to not only friend-us on Facebook but also to share her Facebook password with us. But, she is allowed to use Facebook and Twitter with these restrictions, and she maintains her own private blog. She also has a mobile phone. So I can't decide: where do we fall on the technology-permissiveness spectrum - too open or too closed?
Does your tween use social networks like Facebook, Twitter or MySpace? What about their own YouTube channel? What rules have you put in place, or not, regarding these social networks? The AOL/Nielsen survey informed the creation of tools to help keep kids safe online (via parental controls, profile checking across several social networks, etc.) - so readers, what's your take on online safety for tweens - are we there yet?

Tween Toothpaste Line and Alyson Stoner
A new line of toothpaste, tooth brushes and floss has been developed for tweens called ProHealth for ME. Just in time for back to school, Crest and Oral-B had partnered with Alyson Stoner (of CampRock and Step It Up 3D) to launch the line and teach tweens about good oral health. The toothbrushes are sized for smaller mouths (for tweens ages 8 to 12) (and work well with braces!), and the toothpaste flavors are less strong than traditional mint flavors. We haven't tried this new line yet, but post your review here if your tween tries it!

Part Four of the First Tweens' Summer: Malia and Sasha Obama at Camp and on Vacation
First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama have spent the last month apart. Malia has been at sleepaway summer camp in New Hampshire for the past four weeks. The name of the camp was not released by the White House, but several New Hampshire newspapers have run articles - since suddenly retracted - that she has been at Camp Wicosuta. Camp Wico is a "traditional", all-girls camp in Hebron, NH.
Meanwhile, Sasha vacationed on the Costa del Sol of Spain and the Florida Gulf Coast with her parents. The month started with a mother-daughter trip to the coastal resort town of Marbella, Spain and included beach time, touring historic Spanish towns, and lunching the King and Queen.
Upon returning to the States, the First Lady brought Sasha and her cousins to the Maryland state capital building in Annapolis, MD to learn about state government. The trip was described as a sort of "First Family Summer School" and included a private tour of the building that is the oldest working state capitol in the country and a statue of Thurgood Marshall, the nation's first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Afterwards they visited the U.S. Naval Academy, which is a beautiful campus on the banks of the Severn River.
Last weekend, the President, First Lady, and Sasha Obama vacationed on the Gulf Coast of Florida. They stayed at the Bay Point Marriott in Panama City, FL, went swimming in the Gulf of Mexico at Alligator Point, ate a lot of Gulf seafood (they visited local favorites Lime's Bayside Bar and Grill and Firefly), played mini-golf at Pirate's Island and ended with a boat ride and dolphin siting. The younger Obama tween is apparently quite the ringer - she scored a hold-in-one on the first hole of the mini-golf course (see a video here).
Malia Obama re-joins her family for a last summer break on Martha's Vineyard (where they vacationed last summer as well) this week. More details to come!
