Serendipity 3 Coming to D.C.!

We just heard the good news: Serendipity (NYC's famed Frozen Hot Chocolate spot) is opening in Georgetown!!

They have just signed the lease on the former Nathan's space at the corner of M and Wisconsin Streets, NW, and the opening is expected to be late spring. We cannot WAIT to get our Frozen Hot Chocolate fix (but we are certain that the long lines will follow the cafe from Manhattan) - perhaps Dylan's Candy Bar will open down the street to complete the pair?

First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama were planning on visiting Serendipity during their Spring Break trip to NY last week, but the visit didn't materialize.

Easter Basket Goodies for Tweens

Our tweens have definitely NOT outgrown the Easter tradition of egg hunts or little treats in their baskets. While they spend most of the hunt helping the little ones, here are some little treats to tuck into your tween's baskets on Sunday:

A tiny but unusual craft kit to make necklaces out of pom-poms in fantastic colors! We LOVE the packaging - it looks like an ice cream cone! $6.99 from CreativeKidstuff

Every tween girl's favorite lip gloss by Lip Smacker in a fun egg case. $4.99 at most drugstores

Zhu Zhu Pets were huge this holiday season, and this year the company has released a Zhu Zhu bunny exclusively through Hallmark stores. List price is $12.99, but we've seen prices
far above that online.

And Peeps of course!
Our favorite ribbon candy comes from Hammonds Candies, a family-owned confectioners in Denver, CO. We toured their factory earlier this month and picked up yummy marshmallow eggs (alright, so we DID sample a few first) and their beautiful mini ribbon candies. $17.99 for 2 five ounce bags from www.HammondsCandies.com

We also include something soft; this year it will be microbead candy pillows like the BubbleYum pillow here. $15.99 from FunToCollect

What items do you include for your tweens?

First Tweens Malia & Sasha Obama Tour NYC on Spring Break

Malia and Sasha Obama spent some of their Spring Break from Sidwell Friends School touring New York City last week with their mother, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their maternal grandmother, Marian Robinson. Their experiences in the Big Apple was heavy on musicals, food, and culture - so cool!

They began their tour of Big Apple like any tween would at Dylan's Candy Bar (see our tween's review of Dylan's here) and then took in a show, The Blue Man Group on Saturday.

Sunday was a big day: it included brunch at Iron Chef's Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill and then another show, Memphis (a story about an inter-racial couple in segregation-era Tennessee; word has it that the First Family was dancing in the aisles by the end of the show). After the matinee, the family toured the Empire State Building, got cupcakes for snack at Magnolia Bakery (although our favorite cupcakes are still right here in DC at Georgetown Cupcake), and the had a late lunch at the Russian Tea Room with friends (definitely a high-brow invitation).

Monday saw them at a preview of The Addams Family musical (it opens this week and stars Broadway heavyweights Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth), and Tuesday was spent touring the neighborhood of Harlem and having BBQ at Dino-B-B-Q.

Wednesday was by far our favorite day on their itinerary: the First Tweens toured the set of Sesame Street in Brooklyn! Then they visited Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and had pizza at the famous Grimaldi's. Their vacation ended with a tour of the Statue of Liberty.

Phew - quite the tour! How did you spend your Spring Break? Ms Twixt and tweens enjoyed a stay-cation in DC during Week 1 and then got away for a last minute trip to the Outer Banks, NC during Week 2 (stay tuned for our review!).

Lady Gaga is only 24 years old today, but her music career belies her youth. Everyone get up and just dance!

Our Review of How To Train Your Dragon

Ms Twixt and tweens were invited to an advance screening of How To Train My Dragon last week. We saw the movie at the Georgetown AMC/Lowes theatre on March 9th with another family, and the tweens in attendance were on the younger side - age 7 (the older girls had conflicts). The movie is rated PG (aside from some intense action scenes - the movie is in 3-D - we think it would've received a G rating), and the tweens in the theatre had no issues with the action sequences or 3-D experience.

The movie's story line is unique in that it doesn't gloss over the risks of heroism - we won't give away the ending, but we found it refreshing. The core message is one of acceptance despite differences, but it's told in an unusual - and thus resonate - way. There is a strong female character, Astrid (voiced by America Ferrera) in the tale, and she's independent and strong. She serves as the conscience of the lead character, Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), and is also notable for being a better warrior than the other male characters.

Ms Twixt is usually skeptical of the value of using 3-D as it's often gratuitous, but the 3-D effects are amazing and really add to the experience.  There are spectactular flight (and fight) scenes that are truly made by the technology - the soaring flight sequences convey the sense of freedom and awe felt by the characters and help the audience to understand what makes them tick. It also adds to the intensity of some scenes, so it helps to have a friendly seat mate to grab at times.

We recommend the movie even for young tweens (although not much younger), and our older tweens are excited to see it when it comes out in theatres on March 26th.

For other movie-related posts, check out our ideas for an Alice in Wonderland Tea party and a Percy Jackson party.

Kids' Choice Awards Pre-Party

Not all of us can jet to L.A. to walk the orange carpet at the Kids' Choice Awards, but a virtual pre-party is being hosted by Nickelodeon Parents' Connect for all to attend (full disclosure: Twixt was voted Best Kids' Clothing Store in DC in the Nickelodeon's Parents' Connect Parents' Pick Awards in both 2008 and 2009).

This year, a new category was created,Cutest Couple, and the President and First Lady have been nominated in it - they are up against Edward and Bella and Jacob and Bella from The Twilight Saga: New Moon among others.

Also up for Kids' Choice Awards are the Twilight cast, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Zack and Cody (played by twin brothers Dylan and Cole Sprouse), iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato. Should be quite the night! The awards show airs on Saturday, March 27th at 8pm.

All Cereal, All the Time

At our house, cereal is a go-to food - for breakfast, yes, but also for midnight snacks, dessert, and afterschool for our tweens (and, I'm ashamed to admit, a few times I've had it for dinner myself when sneaking in late from work). My culinary issues aside, a new cafe devoted exclusively to cereal is opening in DC this weekend: The Cereal Bowl.

This new concept is an all-cereal, all-the-time cafe featuring all manner of cold cereals (we can't wait to try the "Give Me S'More" bowl), hot cereals (see, oatmeal is healthy), breakfast parfaits and (of course!) Rice Krispy treat in a multitude of flavors. The staff wears PJs (how cute is that?!), there are TVs showing cartoons, and they're open from early morning to late at night (perfect cereal-eating times).

The Cereal Bowl opens in the Cleveland Park neighborhood of DC at 3420 Connecticut Avenue on Saturday, March 27th at 9am.

100th Birthday of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

A regular stomping ground of DC kids, the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History celebrates its 100th birthday this week (that's a lot of candles to blow out)!

The venerable institution marks this milestone with the opening of a new, interactive exhibit on the beginning of mankind, the David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins. This exhibit opened yesterday, March 17th, but there's still time to catch its special preview viewing today, March 18th, from 12-3pm. This exhibition traces the scientific evidence of humans over the last 6 million years and includes video, podcasts, a family tree of mankind, a "Time Tunnel", reconstructions and more. Very, very cool for kids of all ages - no endless walls to follow.

Some fun facts about the Museum of Natural History:
  • It's two city blocks long - nearly 4 acres!
  • When it was built in 1910, only the U.S. Capitol Dome was bigger
  • 1600 people visited on the first day it opened; since then, 290,000,000 people have been to the Natural History Museum
  • The Museum closed for about a year during World War 1 to house government clerks working on the war effort
  • More fun facts here
This museum also houses the Hope Diamond, the giant squid, the Megalodon jaws, and the Butterfly Pavillion (reservations strongly recommended for this, and a $2.00 fee applies for this exhibit - HINT: if you go on Tuesdays, it's free!).

The special public preview hours for the Human Origins Hall continue tomorrow, March 18, from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm, and the exhibition opens for regular museum hours starting March 19.

Amazing Opportunity For Tween Girls on Take Your Daughter to Work Day

We are NOT in the habit of promoting contests, but this one deserves an exception: Barbie (of all things!) is sponsoring an AMAZING opportunity for tween girls this Take Your Daughter to Work Day (April 22, 2010). The "I Can Be a Mentor" project is looking for girls ages 6 to 14 years old to shadow some REALLY inspiring women and report back about their work day and their advice for girls.

From their site: "In support of Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® Day, many of these 10 Women to Watch in 2010 have generously committed to mentor a girl for one day so she can share her stories with girls everywhere. Can you imagine? A day in the life of any of these women would be a-mazing! If you think your daughter or a special girl in your life is perfect for this job, register now and tell me why. You can also upload a favorite photo or record a video and send it to me (don't worry, it won't be posted without your permission!)
After spending a day in the life with these fabulous women leaders, the girls will be asked to report back with photos, videos and a short written essay to share their experiences so girls everywhere can be inspired. They'll also be asked to attend a one-day celebration on April 22 to report their stories in support of Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® Day."

Tween girls will have the chance to shadow one of these incredible women:

For tweens interested in books/writing:
  • J.K.Rowling (no description needed)
  • Susan Taylor (former Editor-in-Chief of Essence magazine)
For tweens interested in fashion:
  • Rachel Roy (fashion designer and mom)
  • Tavi Gevinson (tween fashion blogger; although we love her, we're not sure exactly how she fits into "Take Our Daughter to Work Day given that she's a full-time student herself)
  • Cindy Leive (Editor-in-Chief of Glamour magazine; NOTE: if your daughter shadows her, PLEASE report back on what they're doing about healthy body image in the media)
For the sporty tween:
  • Danica Patrick (NASCAR's celebrated female racer)
  • Gretchen Bleiler (Olympic snowboarder)
  • Brittany Lincicome (professional LPGA golfer)
For tweens interested in politics:
  • Marie Wilson (founder of the White House Project)
For tweens interested in science:
  • Yoky Matsuoka (Professor of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Wisconsin)
The contest is free to enter, and Mattel promises not to post any information on your tween without your permission.

Justin Bieber Ignores DC Tweens Again!

In addition to his stealth visit into the D.C. area last week (during which he performed at a private bat mitzvah in Baltimore), tween singing sensation Justin Bieber again ignores DC tweens in his latest tour. Mr. Bieber's My World Tour dates announced this morning show that his "North American tour" will in fact miss the entire mid-Atlantic. The closest he will get is Allentown, PA.

So sorry, DC/MD/VA tweens, Mr. Bieber has again ignored our area.

UPDATE: In response to outcry this morning, Mr. Bieber has announced that a second leg of his tour has yet to be announced. Let's see if he includes our nation's capital or sneaks by his Washington fans again.

First Tween Malia Obama and Hello Kitty

First Tween Malia Obama's fashion choices are being modeled by fellow fashion icon Hello Kitty!

In celebration of Hello Kitty's 35th birthday, a series of events around the globe are being held in her honor. Sanrio, Hello Kitty's company, has commissioned a dress for her based on the frock Ms. Obama wore at the Democratic Convention during her father's acceptance of the Democratic Presidential nomination. The dress was designed by Necessary Objects and is a tween-appropriate silhouette of a white sleeveless dress with a pink lace overlay and wide pink sash.

No word as yet on when and where this version of Hello Kitty doll will be available.

Tween Celebs at Tween Town Hall in LA March 13

Ally Katzz' Tween Town Hall (a follow-up to the Tween Summit held in DC last October) convenes for the afternoon tomorrow at UCLA, and several tween celebrities have signed up to attend, including Demi Lovato's little sister Madison de la Garza and Anna Maria Perez de la Tagle (from Camp Rock and Fame).

As at the Summit, tween girls will discuss issues important to them, including community service and ways to make an impact. For a great take on what the Tween Town Hall promises, check out the post on our friend Shaping Youth's blog. And another of our friends, Rosalind Wiseman, is also speaking. Should be a great afternoon!

Taylor Swift Has a Free iPhone App

Lots of tween celebrities have iPhone apps - they offer a way for fans to get exclusive information/news, special messages from the stars, advance notice of events/tickets, and the like. Taylor Swift has joined the iPhone app world, but her app is available for free (most celebs charge $1.99 to $3.99 for their apps). Fans can watch videos, listen to her music, and get her Twitter feed in a single channel on their iPhones. We wonder if she'll start a trend of reward loyal fans with free content/access?

Happy Girl Scout Day!

Have you hugged a Girl Scout today? March 12 commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization's first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. And here's a great article on why Girl Scouting matters from the CEO of the Northern California Girl Scouts.

DC Tweens Disappointed in Justin Bieber for Not Publicizing His Visit

We are so disappointed in Justin Bieber for not publicizing his visit to the DC area last weekend. For his visit to Philadelphia radio stations earlier this week, he posted updates to his MySpace and Twitter pages so that fans would know where to go to meet him - why didn't he do that for his DC fans? Not cool, Mr. Bieber, not cool.

Justin Bieber Snuck Into DC Area Last Weekend

Sadly, Justin Bieber was in the DC area only briefly last weekend and is not slated to return later this week. He made an appearance at a private bat mitzvah in Baltimore over the weekend (March 6th) and was VERY briefly on a local radio station, Hot99.5 on March 8th. He serenaded the Bat Mitzvah celebrant with "One Less Lonely Girl" (all posted videos were recently removed after having their copyright contested by Leah Shapiro); photos below:

Benetton Tween Coming to Georgetown

The shuttered Benetton store at the prime Georgetown location of M and Wisconsin is coming back to life as a Benetton Kids store. We are big fans of their colorful knits and are looking forward to seeing their new look. And Benetton has just announced the debut of their new Tween collection for Spring 2010! It is "inspired by a boho style, beloved of rock and film stars: a magical mix of bohemian and folk moods, Seventies style and hippy vibes."

Sounds groovy! The new store opens on March 18th.

Tweens Witness Mrs. Obama's Inaugural Gown Donation to Smithsonian

DC tweens were part of the select audience to witness the inclusion of First Lady Michelle Obama's inaugural gown into the Smithsonian Museum's permanent collection yesterday. The event took place at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History, and students from Huntington High School in Washington were on hand to attend. The students enjoyed a private audience with the First Lady before the ceremony, and one excited young girl walked away saying, "I'm not washing my hand again!"

Designer Jason Wu also attended, as did designer Tory Burch (our friend Deborah Lehr (co-designer of the Peggy Quish line) and her daughter, Alexandra Rogers, are photographed with Ms. Burch below).

The gown is now on view to the public as part of the Museum's permanent collection, "The First Ladies." The nice staff at the Smithsonian also sent us this video of a behind-the-scenes view of this popular collection:

DC Tweens Await Details for Justin Bieber's Visit This Week

Tweens in Washington, DC are a-Twitter over Justin Bieber's surprise appearance this week. He made good on his promise to visit Philadelphia already, and his visit today to a Philly radio station nearly caused a riot. Mum's the word on where and when he'll be in Washington, but with his scheduled live performances on QVC (presumably at their studios in Delaware) on March 9th and 12th, we're betting that DC will see Mr. Bieber on March 10th or 11th (Caps play at home on the 10th). Justin Bieber Says He's Coming to D.C. THIS Week!

Justin Bieber just posted to his Twitter account that he's coming to D.C. this week, "Washington DC, Philly, NYC this week...gonna make some music and play some hockey too."

We have been searching high and low for word on what he's doing in Washington and where he'll be (perhaps performing for First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama? or taking in the Caps game? (Caps play Monday, Wednesday and Friday night at home - welcome back Ovi!)), but we don't have the details yet. The tween popstar was last in Washington just before Christmas to perform for the President and First Lady at the "Christmas in Washington" concert.

Post your comments below if you have any information on his visit, and stay tuned to this blog - we'll post word right away for all DC tweens to share.

Mad Hatter Tea Party to Celebrate Alice in Wonderland Movie Release

To mark the release of the new Alice in Wonderland movie today, MsTwixt and tweens are having a Mad Hatter Tea Party. We're having tea (of course), playing Hearts and chess, and eating tea cakes, and playing croquet with plastic flamingos. More party deets below:

Setting the scene: a lavish table (set ideally outdoors) with a "turf" tablecloth, bright faux flower centerpieces, mismatched arm chairs, mismatched tea cups, playing cards as placecards, and colorful paper lanterns dangling across the yard.

The treats: we loved the Cheshire Cat macarons and peculiar blue meringue mushrooms from BakeLab. Also "Eat Me" petit fours, Early Grey tea, and homemade pink marshmallows (recipe here).

The attire: mini top hats, character cameos, crystal bling, and Opi's Mad As a Hatter nail polish.

How would you throw a Mad Hatter style tea party? What would you wear?

A Gummy Bear Chandelier?!?

OMG - love, love, love the idea of 5000 tiny acrylic gummy bears dancing across our ceilings. Jellio, the company famous for all things hip, cool and sweet (including our best-selling gummy bear night lights), announced that resident artist Kevin Champeny would create 10 of these amazing chandeliers. No word yet on the price, but this is definitely a sweet piece of art (and your dentist/orthodontist won't flinch).

Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss!

While most Dr. Seuss books are for kids younger than tweens, there are some titles that resonate regardless of age:
  • The Lorax ("I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues")
  • Oh, The Places You'll Go ("You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose")
  • Horton Hears a Who ("A person is a person no matter how small")
Dr. Seuss', or Theodore Giesel's, birthday is March 2nd, and a movement is afoot to celebrate his birthday with a "Read Across America" service day. Here in Washington, American University students will be reading to kids in the D.C. public schools. Or, you could organize a Milk and Bookies event (which we blogged about earlier) to gather books for organizations in need. Our tweens will celebrate by dressing in wacky stripes (like The Cat in the Hat) and reading to their younger siblings - what about yours?

The Festival of Colors, Holi, is today in India and celebrates the end of winter and arrival of spring. Kids and adults celebrate by throwing colored powders on each other and playing pranks.
